Jimmy Buffett & Harrah's to open Biloxi casino.
W00t!
Jimmy Buffett and Harrah’s Entertainment plan for a Margaritaville Casino & Resort on the shores of Biloxi, Mississippi.

The Margaritaville project is expected to cost more than $700 million, representing the single largest investment in Mississippi since Hurricane Katrina, Harrah’s announced in a statement.

“I have always considered myself a “Gulf Coast kid,” Buffet said in a statement released by Harrah’s. “I was born there, grew up there and jumped on a stage for the first time there, before hitting the road. I have seen the world, traveled to distant shores, written a few songs and lived a few tall tales along the way, and now it is good to be coming back home.“

Margaritaville Casino & Resort will be developed on 46 acres of land south of U.S. 90 in Biloxi on the site formerly occupied by Grand Casino and Casino Magic. The Margaritaville Casino & Resort should be completed by spring 2010.

1. I need to see Buffett live some day

But the whole parrot-head cult thing is kind of annoying.

3. I agree, It sounds like he wants to get off the road
and settle down with a lot of money.

I don't think a casino is what the gulf coast needs right now. :(

4. Wow - I used to respect Buffet in a sort of "I guess I should way".

I didn't repsect his music much, but he seemed like a decent liberal, even if he sold a sort of fake beach margarita-ville nonsense vision Kinkade-equivalent non-existent world.

Now I can guilt-free write no-talent gasbag off as nothing but a sellout asshat. And an immoral one, at that.

Go to hell, Jimmy Buffet.

5. Well...some 'interesting' responses here.
The whole Mississippi gulf coast casino gig is not my thing either.
I'm about an hour away from the closest one. I went, several years ago, just to check out the scene. Kinda tacky and I haven't been back.

But if Buffett can make some serious bucks by lending his 'brand' to a casino, I have no problem with it. More power to him.

He has donated over half a million dollars to Hurricane Katrina relief, plus held benefit performances and cut a CD with all profits going to hurricane relief and rebuilding. And he's partnered up with Habitat for Humanity some projects.
He's our 'native son'.

I met his sister, Lucy, last week. She has a new cookbook out, 'Crazy Sista Cooking'.
http://www.crazysistacooking.com/
She came to a luncheon/book signing fundraiser for our local Friends of the Library group. I'd guess that she sold three or four hundred books there (good for her), but we cleared over $3000 for the library in ticket sales. She has a restaurant on the intracoastal down here

and is kind of a local celebrity. She was a BIG draw for us, and we appreciated it.

I was never an Elvis fan, and I was a young teen when he hit the Ed Sullivan show. I can't say he was 'no talent', just not the kind of talent I enjoy seeing.

Just my $.02.

6. He probably is going to make millions on the casino deal
I can't say that I blame him, either. If someone was going to give me millions of dollars for a song I wrote I'd sure as hell take it. This ain't no socialist joint. :)

7. I can't really blame him; hell, I'd probably do the same thing
And who knows, maybe it'll be a "cool" casino. I'd probably go see him play there. He's older now, and his career has kinda peaked, I suppose. Ride it while you can, JB, even if it is a sell-out.

8. His sister may open a restaurant there.
She said "But it's gotta be a beachy place. We haven't figured out how to truck all the sand up to the 3rd floor."

9. Hey Trof
I've seen him several times and the best was at Margaritaville on Decatur in New Orleans. A nice intimate setting of alcohol abuse, good music, wacky dancing and good company. We got all his stuff and never tire of listening to his stuff. I guess we could be considered passive Parrotheads. The Tropical Isle on Bourbon and Orleans is a great Parrot Head Bar. We haven't been to Biloxi in quite awhile. We might have to spend a night over there soon.
