My wife's new car..
last saturday, I went up and picked this little beauty up for my wife.. I've given it a pretty complete tune-up, but I'm still having a few problems getting it to idle right.. I think the fuel pump may be shot.. fortunately, we already have a basket case '71 we can pull parts off of..

1. I had a '71 sedan but it was white
Looked just like that. Loved that car. Friend of mine brought it back from Great Britain when he left the military.

6. I'm kind of developing a love/hate relationship with it..
So far, I've replaced the generator, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, battery and intake manifold gaskets.. and it still isn't wanting to run quite right yet.. but we paid $1500 for it, and I've seen ones in worse shape go for 2 and 3 times that. There's a few VW clubs here in Western Washington, and they do day cruises all spring and summer long, so we'll be getting in on some of that action for sure.. especially this one: http://www.cruiseforthecure.net/

11. Suh-WEET!
And you got it for $1,500? Man, that puppy looks cherry!

I'd love to have a Beetle of that vintage, or a Karmann Ghia, and the know-how to trick it up.

18. It is my understanding that the squareback models suffer from engine ventilation difficulty...
in ways that the beetle does not. Are you going to add anything to help prevent this?

19. Yep yep..
it's already got an extra layer of insulation over the deck lid, but we're going to go one further and get a new seal set for the deck lid, and put another fairly thick layer of rubber under the carpet back there.. then, I hope to find a battery operated CO monitor to keep inside the car to check and make sure it's not venting into the passenger compartment.

24. ooooh.. THAT kind of venting..
I'll probably have to poke around some of the VW forums and see what some of the better options are...it's the first air-cooled car I've ever owned, so I'm a little skeptical about it's ability to keep cool.

27. I learned to drive in one of those, a blue one!
My folks bought a used blue VW wagon for my two sibs and I to drive. My brother started out with it, then went to college. Then it became mine, until I went to school. Then it was my sister's. I loved that car! Called it "The Blue Max". I think the reason I've always been partial to small cars is that I learned in that VW.

And we drove it to death. A great car!!

So, I approve!
