1. Anything in is behavior to go with?
Like, does he charge into every room? Then name him something like Charger. Does he love up on people a lot? Call him Romano or Lover Boy.

3. My late cat's name was Boots
He was a gray tabby with white chest and white paws. I nicknamed him Boots Mobile because he forever went "murp, murp", sounding like the Boost Mobile chirp phone.

17. Name it Sex
Then you can kick Sex out of the bedroom at night, unless you prefer to sleep with Sex.

If you let it roam outside, you can lean out the door and yell "Here, Sex! C'mon Sex! Where are you, Sex?" to entertain your neighbors.

You'll discover Sex on the couch, Sex on the table, Sex on the kitchen counter, even Sex on the toilet taking a drink. Then you can scold it: "No, Sex. Down, Sex."

And don't forget, once Sex gets its claws in you, you'll be hooked.

18. My cats are Fred and Daisy...
...Fred because he's all black with a white front and white forepaws, so he looks like Fred Astaire in a tuxedo and spats. I've always wanted to put a collar on him with a little bow-tie in front, but he won't wear a collar, so he wins. Obviously. "Daisy" for the female because my wife thought she looked like a daisy. Which she doesn't but....she wins. Obviously.

My grandmother had a black cat she named "Midnight." That name was so perfect it hurts. I miss them both.

22. Try looking up names in other languages.
That is how I named my german shepherd pup. I looked up Japanese names and found one that I liked. I named her Akira, which means bright/intelligent. It suits her perfectly. Akira Z Khaos is her official name. Just pick a language and google male names Japanese, for example. I hope that will help.

23. my cats are named Lewis, Clark, Thomas and CatZilla.
Lewis because he was the first kitten out of the box
CatZilla because he was such a huge kitten (but he is not the largest of the adult cats)
Clark because since we had Lewis, somebody had to be Clark

Thomas was named when he came to us. I probably would have named him Sinatra after Old Blue Eyes which is one of his nicknames.
Your cat will give you broad hints, and one day you will find yourself calling him the perfect name.

various other names my cats go by:

the belly 'ho (that is CatZilla, he is also known as the Lickenator)
Lewis Lardbutt
Clark is sometimes called the blonde because he isn't so bright...he is also jet black which makes it funnier.

Thomas is also called boss cat, Tommy, Mr sixtoes

collectively they are the doofi
Lewis and Clark are sometimes called the Goofersons

Their sister started out with a different name which I have forgotten but one day our daughter started calling her "Miss Moo" and that is the name that stuck. She eventually adopted herself out to another family ..she wanted to be an only cat.

Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 09:22 PM by TexasBushwhacker
You just have to give yourself time to get to know him and his little quirks. I took a Siamese mix that had been living under the deck at my house. My mother loved her, but didn't know what to name her. The next day, she found her hiding behind her hottub, so she named her "Heidi".

In the meantime, check out the cuties here and maybe a name will catch you:

32. Agree. Pets generally show you their names, if you give them time
and pay attention.

We puzzled for about two weeks with a new kitten, who was pretty damned wild and assertive. One evening we sat there with her and decided TONIGHT we name the cat. The 90 Pound Hound put his giant paws on Havocdad's leg, gave the tiny feline two licks on the head, forcing her hair into a pair of devil horn spikes....

Ok, Spike it is. See, I was dense, but the dog got it. :D

You'll just start calling him something.

I had a Houdini who could escape from anything. An Elfie who was petite. Now I have Trillby who makes little trilling noises instead of meows, and Basho named after a Zen poet--a mistake. I thought he was calm and meditative but he was just sick. As soon as he got better it became clear that I should have named him Grouchy McCrabs. But it was too late.

Edit to add: I forgot my best names: two stray sisters we trapped and spayed. Mia Feral and her sister Meryl.

26. i would always keep a kitty name to one syllable...
bob, sam, etc.

because then when you have to scream that kitty name when the kitty is doing something kittylike (read: bad),

(and you will have to, a... lot...)

it will be easier on you.

29. I used a Hawaiian dictionary, but almost any non-English language will do
Look up the translations for words such as "paws," "white," "lion," "tiger," "fluffy" and see what sounds good.

Your pet will get a more interesting name and you'll learn at least a couple of words in another language!

31. Being a geek, I usually suggest either Scratch Fury, Destroyer of Worlds (from the online comic PVP)
or Pixel, from sci-fi author Robert Heinlein.

Of course, last time I did that she decided to mix the names together and throw in a bit of the cat's personality, so she named him Pixel, Destroyer of Living Room Furniture.

funny, I know a guy named Simon Elliot...but anyway...

Some unusual ones I've heard: Whackadoodle, Zedzee, Bandersnitch, and Makawao.

Don't name your cat Lola (not that you would since it's a he)... you'll always have either a Barry Manilow song or a Kinks song in your head.

Edited on Tue Mar-11-08 07:50 AM by Lady Freedom
"The Naming Of Cats" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4YGxHqGvTc&feature=related

They are proud, however, and they explain to their human visitors
who they are and reveal that cats have three different names:
the one the family uses daily, the more dignified name and a secret
name. It is the cat's contemplation of the latter that keeps felines
in deep thought.

ALL (Whispering):
The naming of cats is a difficult matter
It isn't just one of your holiday games
You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter

When I tell you a cat must have three different names

First of all, there's the name that the family use daily
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey
All of them are sensible, everyday names

But I tell you a cat needs a name that's particular
A name that's peculiar and more dignified
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular?
Or spread out his whiskers or cherish his pride?

Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo or Coricopat
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum
Names that never belong to more than one cat

But above and beyond there's still one name left over
And that is the name that you will never guess
The name that no human research can discover
But the cat himself knows and will never confess

When you notice a cat in profound meditation
The reason, I tell you, is always the same
His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name

His ineffable, effable, effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular name
Name, name, name, name, name, name

I named her StinkerButt. I'm not allowed to name the pets anymore. My SO refuses to deal with the vet when it comes to appointments for StinkerButt because he hates that name so much. Oddly enough our Vet tells us that his nickname for one of his children when the child was young was "Stinkerbutt."

A friend of ours named his cat "move" because he was always underfoot.

57. Just use the standard names for evil little kittens like this one
We had one litter of kittens we named Satan, Lucifer, Beezelbub and Mephistopheles.

Unfortunately, they all came to "you little fucker." This is because they all learned to climb my wife's leg and hang off her ass at the same time. She wears sweatpants at home, and four kittens hanging off your ass WILL cause your sweats to fall down. So she'd be standing there with her pants around her ankles and four kittens tangled up in them yelling "you little fuckers, STOP THAT!!!"
