4. 8mm, not Super-8, right?...
...I hope you get that film! I love the idea of someone shooting in original 8mm. Please update as to how that goes for you. I'm truly interested. I've shot a lot in 16mm, using vintage Bolex and Bell&Howell cameras, and I've always thought about doing some 8mm work. I have an 8mm camera I've never used.

so i've given up on that

i have your dog tags all packaged up and i'm going to drop them off at the post office on the way to work tomorrow. the problem is that our small town post office closes at 4 (except on wednesday and friday when they close at 11). i was planning on dropping them off on the way back from picking up lunch today, but then the wendy's fiasco happened.

sowie :(

Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 06:39 PM by ALiberalSailor
I love that Ben Franklin quote. Understand that I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. I'm in the Military, so I can't wear something like "Close Gitmo", or most of the others without someone saying something and potential "negative consequences", although I believe we should.. However, that Ben Franklin shirt I think I could get away with.

33. Yes, seriously. I inherited my parents' Home Movies (I'm old), but the film got moldy in the
basement of our last house, so I don't have any reason to keep the editor.

It'll probably need some significant cleaning, but I'll send it to you.

Good to see someone who likes the old-fashioned stuff; do you know that I still use a Century Graphic camera now and again? The old kind with the bellows, with the dark slide and focusing on the groundglass with the hood over my head...the whole bit.

Because, even in these digital days, there's nothing like that 2 by 3 inch transparency for impact. And slowing the whole picture-taking process down gives you time to think about the shot.

Edited on Mon Mar-10-08 10:12 PM by Ava
when he comes home this weekend she is going to give it to him. both he and I have always loved stuff like that. i use to go to garage sales with my mom and go through all to old stuff there. i've got gobs of vintage stuff as a result and i absolutely love them all!

and isn't it strange how older things have lasted so long yet now when we buy something we are lucky if it lasts one year?

45. I think those are beautiful
I don't have one that pretty but I have an old Belle$Howell ZOOMATIC, and some antique Polaroids and stuff. I collect old cameras but none of mine work.. the old video camera makes cool spinning noise though :headbang:

A very old woman I work with came in and saw the cameras and commented on my nice collection but to her I bet they weren't antiques at all.. I felt kinda silly about it for a second :)

48. Some info about digitizing film.

Hi, Ava. I am a multi-media specialist, but not an EXPERT, at a university library. We often get requests to convert 8mm (or 16mm) film to digital; we are not able to do it here. This process is not easy nor is it cheap. I know you make videos and I know that 8mm has a great effect and warmth to it, but I thought I should warn you. As far as I know, the process has 2 problems.

1) you need a high speed scanner. Not the end of the world, but not always easily available.

2) The frame rate of a film recorder is ~ 24 frames per second; video (digital or otherwise) is ~ 30 fps. This means that software must render it in order for it to play.

I haven't done any research to see if there are cheap and easy ways to overcome this, but I wanted you to know that digitizing film is not as easy as doing video.

I also make digital videos; please check out my youtubes at radiationtherapyband. Most of the footage is super 8 converted to VHS in the eighties. Because VHS is 30 fps, I was able to digitze it with no hangups. I am looking forward to making some political videos; your work is inspiring to me. Thank you.
