Weirdest thing happened- I thought I had killed Chairman Meow (one of my cats).
I came home from work and there was a dead tabby cat laying in the driveway. He was a carbon copy of my cat right down to the markings. I was cussing myself for killing one of my best fur buddies and shedding tears for the poor guy who died from my stupidity of running him over. I figured I would let the dogs & surviving cat sniff him so they would know what happened. They came out along with flea taxi (my "surviving cat"). They all were interested and it was a touching scene UNTIL I SAW CHAIRMAN MEOW walk up for a sniff! I was a long day at work so I had to physically touch BOTH live cats to verify they were my guys.( a ghost perhaps?)

I did give the stranger a proper burial & did mourn his death. I am guessing he is one of the numerous feral cats in my area. My guess is he was drawn in by the water bowl & might have been sleeping behind a tire?

I doubt he is a neighbors pet due to where I live, the nearest neighbor is a half mile away & I have never seen a cat on his property.

I am sad for having run the poor guy over, had I known he was there I would have tried to adopt him. It has been the weirdest thing that has happened to me in a long time. What are the odds of this happening?

1. I'm no statistician, but I'd guess pretty long...I have a friend who has
a cat named Chairman Miao, maybe they're related *lol*

2. Oh you poor thing - it's awful either way, but I'm glad Chairman Meow lives on
Don't be hard on yourself - you didn't know he was there. He probably didn't suffer at all, and in the end he did have someone who cared enough about him to bury and mourn him.

3. I'm very sorry for what you've been through.
And I'm very sorry for that cat too. I'm glad it wasn't Chairman Meow.

That's got to be some stress and conflicting emotions you're dealing with. Please relax, breathe, and be well. :)

5. I adopted both of the guys on Labor day, 2004.

Here they are a couple of years ago. Damn, I don't know whether to be happy or sad? I am leaning towards sad though. My cat is alive & a good cat died today. I caused his death.

6. that's tough-- sorry you had to bury a kitty....
I have a similar story, but in an opposite sort of way. One day one of my cats was outside. He was completely coal black-- not a marking on him. Later, I heard a cat at the back door but when I went to let him in the cat at the door was a stanger-- the same size as mine (he was a big cat) but a reddish blond sort of color, very striking for a cat, really. I didn't let him in but I wondered where he came from. He seemed in good health but I didn't recognize him and I thought I knew all the neighborhood cats.

He hung around for hours, looking at me indignantly and meowing to come in. Finally, after several hours, I let him in. I reached down to pet him and the moment I touched him realized that he was my cat after all, but with every inch of his body completely covered by light tan dust. The dust was worked into his fur and so fine that it clung electrostatically to him, completely masking his real color. I mean EVERY INCH-- body, face, inside his ears, and so on.

He did not enjoy the bath that ensued.

7. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Sometimes cats like to climb up in the engine compartments, on the top of the exhaust or on top of tires to hide or keep warm. You could not have known he was there. I am glad you gave him a proper burial. I know how hard that must have been.

8. Did you name the kitty posthumously?
I'm sorry you had to go through that experience. Thank you for giving him a decent burial.

11. Do you know for sure you ran over him
We had a feral cat die in our driveway from something else. Was it clear the cat had been run over?

I would be a basket case myself. When I was 16 or so (just got my drivers license) I was leaving my house on my way to pick up my brother and following someone in another car (I don't remember who it was - it might have been someone giving my sister a ride - I just remember I knew them). A cat ran between our cars and there was no way I could stop. I ran right over it. You can't miss running over a cat. It was the most horrible sensation. I turned around and drove back to the house (we lived on the corner lot and I had just turned the corner so it was essentially on the side of my house) and went in to tell my dad practically in hysterics. I think I was as much upset that whoever's cat it was wouldn't know what happened to it as I was about having killed it. He promised to see if it was someone's pet and take care of it and sent me out to get my brother. I didn't want to go - was still shaking - but there was no one else who could and my brother was waiting for me.

Anyway, my point is, it is hard to not notice running over a cat.

13. Come to think of it, the dogs may have killed it before I ran it over.
I have them on "the invisible fence" & it is possible they had killed it & brought it up to the house. They were out all night.

14. I'm sorry
I would imagine that, like you said, the dogs had gotten to it first. I don't think a healthy cat would have stayed asleep once you started the car. My cats wake up to check out any noise.
