8th grade honors student suspended for buying a bag of Skittles
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 12:21 PM by edbermac
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- Contraband candy has led to big trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo says the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension has been reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

He says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules -- although he did notice the student selling the Skittles on February 26 was being secretive.

2. Trafficking in Skittles? My god, what a monster!
I'm just glad he was caught early before he wreaked a path of confectionery destruction on the world.

10. When Skittles are outlawed
Only outlaws will get that insoluble, gummy saliva that follows a mouthful of those tasty confections.

3. ...
"although he did notice the student selling the Skittles on February 26 was being secretive" lol...was the kid like "psst...wanna taste the rainbow?"

While I'm for healthy snacks in school, suspending a kid for buying a bag of candy is a bit much

6. This issue, which I'm not sure is in the story
is that the school doesn't want the kids carrying money in the school. Apparently there have been alot being stolen.

It is ok to give someone candy or trade it without money being involved.

9. This is seriously a screwed-up world we're living in
(in which we're living? Sorry). When my little brother was in fourth or fifth grade, some kid pulled a knife on one of my brother's good friends...and only got suspended for two days. :wtf: (Luckily, my brother's friend wasn't hurt - quick reflexes and karate training allowed him to knock the 3-inch knife out of the kid's hand before he could do any damage, but it was still pretty scary.) If they start to suspend a kid for three days for buying freaking Skittles and only suspend a knife-wielding potential danger for two...man, I don't know. :scared:

11. Well, isn't *this* interesting
From the student newspaper of something called "High School in the Community" (HSC), part of New Haven Public Schools:

Juniors are getting a leg up and are raising funds for senior year costs by selling candy canes, cards and bags of candy, if you don't want to buy candy canes.

http://209.85.165.104/search?q=cache:KLfUGhTTfmMJ:www.nhps.net/hsc/Muse94.pdf+candy&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us

And this:

Healthy Kids includes:

<snip>

Limiting the sale of soda and candy in schools. In the fall, soda machines will be replaced with attractive, well marketed machines selling everything from water and real fruit juice drinks to flavored milks. No candy or junk food will be sold through vending machines. Healthy alternatives (such as granola bars and baked chips) will be used.

http://www.nhps.net/announcements/announce.asp?NewsID=%7B3273A78E-13B5-4559-8C00-E6B5EA5C67E6%7D

Doesn't say anything about kids selling candy to other kids.

12. They'll have to pry my Skittles from my cold dead hands

Stupid rules. No tolerance. Maybe we should hire a private investigator to see if the person who suspended him has any skeletons.

I'd sue the fuckers just to cost them money.

14. Well, since Skittles aren't vegetarian
no skin off my back, but if this really is because of the wellness policy (which I doubt) then chock one more up in the fucking absurd column for NCLB.

Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 01:46 PM by KamaAina
'83-'85 while at Yale, and again '92-'96... or maybe I could just write a parody of a Philip Roth novel and call it "Goodbye New Haven". :eyes:

21. I was suspended for selling gum in school....
Used to go the donut shop (Maries) and buy about 100 pieces of gum every morning. 50 cents. Sold em for 2 cents each, made a couple of bucks.

The Principal called me in and I got all smartass on him. So he suspended me. It was then that I realized that Principals have no tolerance of sacrcasm.

leading to chocolate bunnies, and then to Snickers bars.

Doesn't he know there's a "War on Sweets"?
