14. I hope you're referring to Fab Morvan.
Because it will be a cold day in hell before I'll accept seeing Rob Pilatus in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

4. The other day hedges said it best...
The fact that she had the Stooges perform her songs proves she's worthy.

7. Your "definition" of rock-n-roll is awfully narrow,
Her career in music (rock/pop) is quite worthy of the Hall of Fame and has been for years. They can't all be Steely Dan.

http://www.rockhall.com/inductee/madonna

Madonna became one of the top stars of the Eighties, selling 60 million records worldwide, making headlines and achieving a level of pop celebrity rivaled only by Michael Jackson, Prince and Bruce Springsteen. She had seven #1 hits (from 1984’s “Like a Virgin” through 1989’s “Cherish”) and three #1 albums (Like a Virgin, True Blue, Like a Prayer) in that time. She also sparked debate and controversy with such songs as “Material Girl” and “Papa Don’t Preach.” She released four of the decade’s most high-impact albums – Madonna (1983), Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986) and Like a Prayer (1989). They collectively logged eight-and-a-half years on the charts, making Madonna a ubiquitous presence. She also charted 20 singles in the Eighties, seven of which reached #1 – a number surpassed only by Michael Jackson’s nine.

17. OK, she had a lot of hits
That doesn't quite explain how she fits into the rock-n-roll genre.

If there were an American music hall of fame, she'd belong there, or a Pop Music hall of fame, but not rock-n-roll.

33. Meh
Muddy Waters is the Blues, Bob Marley is Reggae, Dinah Washington is jazz. All types get in.

I don't think of Dusty Springfield or Joni Mitchell as rockers, but they're in. It's all good.

9. Who really gives a shit?
The rock & roll hall of fame is meaningless anyway. I love how people complain about how it sucks and they'll never go there because their favorite band will never get inducted, yet get all bent out of shape for that exact same reason.

There's a bunch of bands that qualify that I THINK should be in there, but aren't.

in there.

But I understand why a lot of folks think the whole thing is meaningless.

They do actually have a great exhibit case about Akron bands like Per Ubu, however. It was very cool seeing the bass that was smashed on the cover of London Calling, as well as Ramone's jackets.

26. Actually...
Their early work was a little too New Wave for my taste, but when Sports came out, in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor....In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

After all...they won the 1979 'Best New Artist' Grammy
the same year that those slackers 'Elvis Costello & The Attractions'
and 'The Cars' were nominated.

30. Peart's drum set from the Counterparts tour was in there . . . but Peart isn't.
Not just Madonna, pretty much all of this year's nominees are either head scratchers or exercises in the safe and sound. I mean, what the hell did Madonna influence? Hype-driven shitty dance pop which relies more on looks and sexual imagery than talent? Cookie cutter bullshittery that comprises 90% of the lamestream music scene since about 1996? American Idol??? MTV???

And John Mellencougarcamp? HUH?

Folks, there's no fucking way Madonna should get in a hall of any kind of fame before Rush, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Dead Kennedys, The Mothers of Invention (Zappa got inducted in 1995), Black Flag, Run DMC or Metallica (who was eligible this year).

34. Wait - Metallica was eligible and didn't get it?
I think I would be less upset about all of this if we just called it the "American Music Hall-of-Fame" since clearly we're not putting in legendary acts like Metallica

35. 25 years from your first album, right?
Kill 'Em All was released in 1983. I think they'll probably get considered next year, since it was released in June of '83. I mean, I HOPE next year's selections are better.

I don't know if I'd call Metallica legendary, per se. Then again, I don't know if I'd call The Dave Clark Five or John MellenCougarCamp that either . . .
