We're just not that into naming inanimate objects.

And, no, I do NOT have a pet name for my husband's penis. After 36 years, it's just THERE.

32. I had an old Lincoln Town Car called 'Abe'.
It was an 'airport car'.
Most airline pilots had one. Mechanically good, but junky enough on the outside so that you could leave it at the airport for several days and it would still be there when you got back.

Bought it from a buddy who transferred domiciles from Boston to Dallas. He had pleaded with me to buy 'Abe'. That's what was on the NH vanity plate.

I didn't really want it.
He really wanted me to have it.
Finally said "Look, I won't GIVE it to you. But I'll sell it to you for $100."
I couldn't turn that down.
One stipulation: I had to keep the vanity tag.
I agreed.

The only thing in good shape was the engine and transmission and the leather interior.
I spent about $300 to get all the bells and whistles working again.
Power seats, windows, mirrors, stereo, 'eyelids' on the headlights, A/C.

Did some bondo work on the body and put on a coat of primer.
Put a coat of plastic 'paint' (dark blue) on the faded vinyl top.
And paid a friend who moonlighted doing body work to paint it battleship gray.

Even had a moon-roof put in.
And now it was too good to take to the airport.
So it was the family buggy for a few years.
It was a dream to drive.
What a BOAT!

The last time I took it in for state inspection, my mechanic said "This is probably the last year it'll pass. You're getting some serious frame rot (NH salty winters) that will cost WAY more than you want to pay to fix."

I put an ad in the paper.
A crusty old yankee redneck was the only guy who came to look at it.
I told him about the frame.
"I'm a logger. I'm gonna make a woods buggy out of it."
Whatever.
He gave me $200 for it.

'Woods buggy' my ass.
A year later I got a notice from some town in Maine about an unpaid parking ticket.
The bastard never re-registered the car and was obviously using it on the street.
I told them I'd sold the car a year before.
:grr:

8. I'm afraid that name would render me too silly to drive
As I'm a great fan of Mary Tyler Moore, whenever said vehicle failed to start on the first or second crank or otherwise disappointed me, I couldn't possibly help but think, "MURray! Murray, Murray, Murray! MURR!"

:D

when I had an mgb, a looooong time ago, it was named Fletcher, which had something do with something at the time, but can't remember what. Mine looked like this... I loved that little car... wouldn't mind a vintage mbg either... I don't drive very much... I'm not trying to kill the earth, I promise...)

And that's exactly why he chose The Todd. He even has a cargo net in the back, which we of course call the banana hammock.

13. My '66 Chevy, which I sold 26 years ago,
was "the Mule," from the Deep Purple song of the same name. The cool part was, all my friends used it, too.

My '65 El Camino technically has a name because of the personalized plates I chose for it, but I never use it nor even think of it that way. It's just "my truck."

24. In chronological order:
The Chocolate Drop (a brown Nash)
Mehitabel (a blue Ford)
The Pink Lady (a pink Rambler)
Carmen (a red VW bug)
Fat Albert (a gold Ford)
Heffalump (a white MG Magnet)
Gandalf (a gray Citroen Deux Chevaux)
Jabberwock (a blue Chevy)
Madam Butterfly (a red Datsun)
Buttercup (a yellow Nissan)
Miss Dixie (a green Chrysler)

The Chocolate Drop was my family's car in 1949 - I don't go through cars that fast. Gandalf and Heffalump came to very sad ends, guaranteeing I would never, ever buy another French or English car again (mechanical failures that damned near killed me).

30. One. Big Blue.
It was a 70-something Blue Ford F-150.
Crew cab and long bed.
So long it wouldn't go in the garage, so I got one of those tarp covered quonset type 'garages' to put it in. We lived in the boonies, in the woods, so no neighbors to complain.

The quonset looked like a hangar to me, so I put a windsock on top.
A real boot sock, with red heel and toe. Made a plastic liner, so it really worked.

Blue had no power steering, or, as we joked , it had 'Arm-Strong' power steering. I put what we used to call a 'necker knob', actually from a tractor store, on the steering wheel to help.

I took the rear window out and installed a weatherproof seal so you could crawl through into the back or talk to passengers back there.
Seat belts?
We didn't need no steenkeen seat belts.
;-)
Put a mattress in the truck bed and we used it for road trips when our daughter was little.
And when gas was around 50 cents a gallon.

We had a lot of fun with Big Blue.

35. I'll bet you had "4/55" airconditioning too
All 4 windows open at 55 miles an hour, just like my present beast. Though being a pick-up maybe Big Blue had 2/55 air?

I learned how to drive on my uncle's El Camino, so I know what you mean about "Armstrong Power Steering".

33. My car has 2 names -- Blue Goo and the Liberalmobile
the latter because of my prolific use of political bumper stickers. My first car was the Nuclear Pickle because it was a really hideous shade of green (sort of reminiscent of that particular neon green you see on the relish used for Chicago Style hotdogs). The other 4 cars in between didn't have enough personality to be named.
