7. The Pogues are the best!
David Simon, creator of that great series "The Wire" had the police characters all singing a Pogues song at a mock wake in the final episode.

Was Simon watching the final episode when it was broadcast?

Nope. He was at a Pogues concert in DC at the 9:30 Club.

which kinda leaves them out of the whole "Best Irish Band" equation.

And, no one thinks of them as an English band, non-Irish boy! (well, at least I don't think you are!) :P

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeuBeU3BL60&feature=related

Saw them a long, long time ago at Carnegie. Often copied, never equalled.

Listened to traditional Irish and Gaelic music my entire life, and always go back to the Clancy Brothers.

54. Though he is no longer with us, my favorite Irish performer will always be Rory Gallagher
He was an amazingly talented guitarist and his love for his music was matched only by the love and respect that he showed his fans. I first heard him in the 70s and I have yet to see anyone who impressed me as much as he did. Here's a sample:

Moonchild
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyHymAxUVrc

By the way, this isn't traditional Irish music like the Pogues or the Chieftains but then, neither is U2! The Edge was a fan of Rory's however, "A beautiful man and an amazing guitar player. He was a very sensitive man and a great musician." The Edge (U2)

55. "The Commitments " Irish soul.
http://www.amazon.com/Commitments-Two-Disc-Collectors-Michael-Aherne/dp/B00018D3XW

Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr.: Is this the band then? Betcha U2 are shittin' themselves.

Jimmy Rabbitte: Soul is the music people understand. Sure it's basic and it's simple. But it's something else 'cause, 'cause, 'cause it's honest, that's it. Its honest. There's no fuckin' bullshit. It sticks its neck out and says it straight from the heart. Sure there's a lot of different music you can get off on but soul is more than that. It takes you somewhere else. It grabs you by the balls and lifts you above the shite.

Jimmy Rabbitte: Do you not get it, lads? The Irish are the blacks of Europe. And Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland. And the Northside Dubliners are the blacks of Dublin. So say it once, say it loud: I'm black and I'm proud.
