A spectacularly craptacular ending to a spectacularly craptacular week.
I get in my car on Saturday at 2:30 to drive over to TM's show choir competition. She calls me on the way to tell me that some other group hasn't shown up and that her group is going on at 3:30, so I'd better hurry.

So, I do.

I blow by two Henrico officers going approximately 80MPH in a 45MPH zone. (I know, I know).

I look in the rear view mirror and obviously, one of them is following me. So, I duck into a subdivision and he gets me.

Me: I know I was speeding; I'm trying to get to my daughter's show choir competition.

Him: Where is it?

Me: Hanover High School, up the street.

Him: What are you doing in here?

Me: Avoiding you.

Him: (laughing) You're the first person who ever admitted that.

So, I had him my information and wait. He returns with a ticket for speeding, but not reckless.

Me: Any chance you'd give me a police escort so I'll make the competition?

Him: No. I can only do that for Heads of State.

Me: What if I told you I was Laura Bush and having a bad hair day?

Him: I'd have to take you to jail for handing me false ID.

Me: Dammit. Would you care for a Perrier? I was just at Sam's Club and have a case in the back.

Him: No, but thank you, ma'am.

Me: Admit it, this is going to be fodder for your dinner conversation tonight.

Him: You betcha.

So, Now I will have to go to traffic court, blah, blah, blah.

And, for the record, you hatas, in all of my 33+ years of driving, this is the first time I've ever been pulled over. Ever.

13. Neither have I -- not even a single parking ticket
Haruka, meanwhile, has rode in the back of a squadcar over parking tickets.

in that situation.

:yourock:

Sorry about the ticket though. I've only been ticketed for speeding once when I was 17 and cutting school. The dudes in my backseat had just cracked a beer. I was lucky I only got the speeding ticket. I had to go to court for it too.

16. That SUCKS. How bad was the ticket?
I got popped going 75 in a 55 on my way to Gordon's a few weeks ago. First speeding ticket for me, too. I didn't try to talk my way out of it, shed no tears (but did look utterly sad, I'm sure), and the cop only wrote it for 65 in a 55 (thereby saving me about $150).

Bleah. I spent the rest of the day feeling like I was still in trouble.

But, the cop thinks I should go to court and go to traffic school, which I will probably do.

BTW, thanks for the PM. Things are looking up, albeit in a small, small way.

31. No. I have to call tomorrow morning and get the amount.
But, I'm betting it'll be high. The cop told me since I have a totally clean record, I should go to court and the judge will send me to driving school. Ugh.

Beats higher insurance rates, though.

Virginia motorists convicted of minor traffic violations will face a new, multi-year tax beginning July 1. Led by state Delegate David B. Albo (R-Springfield), lawmakers slipped a driver responsibility tax into a larger transportation funding bill signed by Governor Tim Kaine (D) in April. Albo, a senior partner in the Albo & Oblon, LLP traffic law firm, can expect to see a significant increase in business as motorists seek to protect their wallet from traffic tickets that come with assessments of up to $3000 in addition to an annual point tax that tops out at $700 a year for as long as the points remain.

"The purpose of the civil remedial fees imposed in this section is to generate revenue," the new law states. (Virginia Code 46.2-206.1)

Driving as little as 15 MPH over the limit on an interstate highway now brings six license demerit points, a fine of up to $2500, up to one year in jail, and a new mandatory $1050 tax. The law also imposes an additional annual fee of up to $100 if a prior conviction leaves the motorist with a balance of eight demerit points, plus $75 for each additional point (up to $700 a year). The conviction in this example remains on the record for five years.

Other six-point convictions include "failing to give a proper signal," "passing a school bus" or "driving with an obstructed view." The same $1050 assessment applies, but the conviction remains on the record for eleven years.

Even my poor husband when confronted with the possibility of a large fine thought it was funny.

Oh, and I'm going to wear my show choir shirt to court. I asked the cop and after he stopped laughing, he said he thought it would be a good idea.
