Airline Meals
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 08:11 PM by Sugar Smack
I think Kitchenwitch was the one who introduced me to this site. It's huge. There are thousands of airline meals featured in pictures taken by passengers. Underneath the pictures are food reviews--> some of them are pretty funny. This brings back memories because although I never had anything really exotic to eat on a plane, sometimes I really liked the food.

I also always did the obssessive-compulsive thing of ALWAYS saving the miniature peppermint chocolates, individually-wrapped "gourmet" crackers, Laughing Cow cheese triangles, and breadsticks for "later" in my carry-on. I love some of these entries-

This is from Continental:

Dal Curry,Spiced Lentils
Carrot Pilaf

Drink: Water
Comments: A good tasty meal. Continental has done a good job with this meal.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 9.5

Aegean Airlines:

Comments: I liked bread :)
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 6

Royal Nepal:

Route: Shanghai-Katmandu, 17/08/2003
Ticket price: JPY 156000 (KIX-KTM RT)
Flight diration: 6hr
Aircraft type & class: B757-200 business class
Meal type: Dinner
Contents of the meal: chicken select
Drink: Red wine
Rating: 6

And Alaska Airlines:

Picture taken by: Jer Reeves
Route: Seattle - Chicago, 30 Mar 2006
Ticket price:
Flight duration: 4h 00m
Class: first
Aircraft: 737-600
Meal: Brunch - Breakfast Buritto
Salsa in a tube
Fruit garnish
Drink: Blloody Mary
Comments: I have dubbed thiis miniscule, lackluster morning meal offering The No-See'em Flite Diet. It could be called the Why Bother?
Portions are so small that the buritto was sliced in half and the fruit cup was four chunks of fruit.
Every time the flight attendants came out of the galley they seemed surprised that we were still there. This is so not Alaska's usual great service and first class offering.
Rating 1-10 (worst-best): 4

3. Hey, lady! How are you doing??
:) I included a link at the bottom of my post. If you go to the site, beware that you may be there all night. It's wonderful- There are also descriptions of airport lounges, crew meals, and "special" meals, which I never got around to seeing- there was too much to look at.

4. I'm doing well!
And that site made me realize that Air Canada's meals kind of suck in relation to other airlines.

24. Good. You seemed terrified the other day.
Glad you're doing better.

Some of those meals look over the top glamorous. And a few look like they came from 7-11.

note--if you look closely the person submitting the photo tells what flight/class the photo was taken

13. Thanks, pitohui. I hadn't looked closely enough.
I was mainly looking at the pics & then immediately at the descriptions. How long have the airports been calling 1st class "elite"? From what I remember, you travel a lot. I think I noticed this particular trend-elite instead of 1st class-about 3 years ago.

9. *snort* No wonder he was disappointed. Although-
He was also having a bloody mary at breakfast at a very, VERY high altitude. Maybe made for a sloppy combo. How'd you like the line: "Every time the flight attendants came out of the galley they seemed surprised that we were still there."

 I flew Alaska twice and loved it.

25. It made me giggle... Alaska was a really nice airline.
When we came back from Houston last month, on the leg from Houston to Atlanta, the flight attendants would disappear for long periods of time. It was like they had entered another dimension. And then they would just pop up, like they had been there all along.

14. They think the petri dish is going to taste better just because it's served
at 30,000 feet. You tell them you won't sit still for that.

I remeber the good old days, fondly, too. I think my last flight was American Airlines & I got the "gourmet" pretzels.

15. Well, you can BUY their meal for 5 bucks, or whatever it costs.
Screw that. Here in the Austin airport, we have local restaurants doing the food. I'd rather spend my heard-earned cash there and take the food aboard. Or, just pack Clif Bars and Larabars and make do.

Gourmet pretzels? What? Smoked salt on those pretzels? :)

16. Do you know what my brat brother, whom I love, does?
He gets the big Quizno's roast beef/turkey & cheese special, you know, where "lettuce" only serves as a vehicle for holding Ranch dressing & spices, onions, etc. And then he unwraps this airtight-wrapped monstrosity in the midst of the trip. So that there's a sort of "poof" of aroma besetting the rest of the passengers.

Well, to that I say he'd better be careful. A person like me could knock him over for one of those if I were so inclined.

18. I've gotten the personal-size Chicago-style deep dish pizza before.
The looks I got from my fellow passengers was met by a "What? Mangia is RIGHT THERE in the airport. YOU could have had one of these, but you went with Schlotsky's."

Most of the time, though, I just pack my own snacks. It's cheaper that way.

19. Well, DAMN! I must say "THANK YOU"- I have the damn thing blogrolled
in my journal. I showed it to my brother while we were on the phone, and he wanted to "call me back later" so he could dive into it.

:D It is truly addictive, especially if it's one of your "guilty pleasures".

21. I actually used to like airline food. I've had some good meals on planes.
I hear the eyes rolling, so I have to protest that I have what I consider a fairly sophisticated palate. I can say that with a straight face even though I shamelessly admit to loving the food I had in the Army, too. B-)

I haven't received a really good meal on a flight in a long time. Nowadays, meals are "pay-as-you-go" instead of included in the price of the ticket. And what they offer are things like cheeseburgers and so on. The flight I took coming home from Cancun, I was offered a cheeseburger for $5. It was actually a pretty good cheeseburger, but I miss being able to get a steak with asparagus tips and garlic mashed potatoes on a flight.

Hi, Sugar Smack! :hi:

22. If you have deep enough pockets, you can get "the box"
Which has the appeal of surprise. They can't fool ME! It's going to taste just as "iffy" as it would presented on a plate or on terra firma.

Do you remember Eastern Airlines? I loved that airline. I loved the food. But I think I was ten when they shut down. My kid brother & I were loaded down with all manner of goop that they give to children. Coloring books, pins, soda, cookies, crayons, etc. Lots of attention.

You loved army food? I can see that; so did my dad. He has a nostalgia for those days.

Guess what? The best lasagne I ever had was at Duke Memorial Hospital. I'd had my appendix taken out. Hadn't eaten for days. My room-mate looked at me like she wanted to knock me down (she couldn't eat either).

23. The best food I ever had on a flight was on Pan Am. Like Eastern, it too
has gone the way of the Conestoga wagon.

Remind me sometime to tell you about the chartered Pan Am flight we took down to the Gulf in '91. That was one for the books. B-)

26. I've had mixed experiences
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 07:11 AM by socialdemocrat1981
Asian airlines tend to be pretty good as a general rule. Malaysia and Singapore Airlines have recently had excellent cuisine on board -quite a few lovely local dishes and lovely deserts and sweets

United Airlines -flying about in the US -was slightly touch and go. We had some good meals on some of the flights and some meals that could have been improved on others.

I flew back on Czech Airlines back in the 1980s but I was very young so I don't remember the cuisine

Virgin Airlines, in Australia, has some great cuisine but you have to pay for it in mid-flight as an extra charge. Still worth the cost

Actually I've liked most of my on board meals

The Continental meal posted above looks wonderful

30. This one's beautiful. It's from Malaysian Airlines.
It's described as a fish platter with potatoes on the side.

With United, I remember when the meals were hot, and I think now with scraping back on meals, they do just sandwich or cracker-salami-spread. I'll never forget flying to and from Paris. I think that was the last good time in general I had on a plane.

31. Transatlantic flights treat you well, don't they?
Well, I had to get smashed, shitfaced, soused, ciphered, wasted, etc. the last time I had to board a plane. It was to San Fran. My father was sitting next to me at takeoff, looking peaceful. I'd suddenly become terrified of flying a few years ago, and asked my dad on our last trip, "HOW can you be so.. so SMUG?" I was white-knuckled, I'll tell you, & I wish there was a way to be ok w/flying again. Since I don't drink now, they'll have to knock me out like Mr. T.

I'm going to look up the Lufthansa section on that site, for fun. :)

28. Champagne & Chateaubriand
I remember the good ol' days at TWA. I flew for them for about 30 years.

Once in a while I'd get first class passes for me and Miz t.
I think there was a $10 surcharge for 1st. Coach was free.

Sometimes we'd be on vacation, and sometimes we'd just fly from Boston to LA, enjoying a magnificent dinner, drinks, and a movie. Pretty cheap date. Spend the night in LA and fly back the next day.
We were livin' high on the hog back then.

The first class meal service was true gourmet fare.
As soon as you boarded you were handed a glass of champagne.
After take-off the bar cart came around for before dinner cocktails. Top brands of booze.
I'd settle in with a Scotch & soda and light up.
(Yes kiddies, you could smoke on airplanes back then.)
Then the hors d'ouvres.
Lobster, shrimp, caviar, quiche, pate' de fois gras, etc.
Then the salad course followed by the entrees.
My favorite was the chateau. Whole beef tenderloins, done to a turn and carved at your seat.
"Rare? Medium rare? How thick would you like the slices?"

It was nice while it lasted.
Gone are the days.
:-(

32. Oh, lord, trof. You're reminding me of a scene in The Witches of Eastwick where
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 11:55 AM by Sugar Smack
Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer & Jack Nicholson are dancing and rolling around on a drink cart in this huge mansion filled with pink balloons. If you haven't seen the movie you'll think I'm nuts, but yours was such a great description of living high-on-the-hog. Really sort of dreamy & perfect!

I miss smoking in a plane. I take my niccorrete, and if I get to a terminal that has a glassed-in cage for smokers, I don't go in but for 2 seconds to get the contact buzz.

"Then the hors d'ouvres.

29. what a fun site!
I could spend hours perusing the meals!

I just flew coach round trip LAX to Honduras, on TACA airlines (I was told by an ex-pat down there that they call it "take a chance airlines"!!). I was served the WORST airline food I'd ever had. Very watery eggs, mushy hash browns....ugh. And brusque - bordering on rude - flight attendants. I guess I should be thankful that they didn't lose my luggage! :-(

33. Do you know, one reason I like the site so much
is that there are so MANY different knds of people contributing. There are what look like professional photographers and Martha-Stewart settings, and then there's the passenger who's taking a blurry pic but may have a beautifully-written review. There's almost TOO much to look at in that site. It's no wonder my bro had to hang up the phone with me after 10 minutes from San Fran so he could go look.

Oooh, going to go look up TACA airlines now!!
