Post music you like that nobody else has heard of:
Here's a really cool local band, slightly famous here, but I doubt anyone outside of Toronto has heard of them. They have a really cool electro/pop/rock sound. http://www.myspace.com/danceyourselftodeath

Lisa Bozikovic - she performed at a fundraiser I was at last week, I'd never heard of her, her stuff is really good. She (vaguely) reminds me of Tori Amos. http://www.myspace.com/mamalisoni

Emma McKenna was also performing at the same fundraiser. Her voice is really unique. http://www.myspace.com/emmamckenna

15. Jandek... This guy is practically an obscure-record-collector's wet dream.
Something like 50 albums released since 1978, without ever revealing his identity, and up until 2004 he'd never even performed live. As for the actual music, I only have a handful of his albums, but even those run the gamut from solo acoustic stuff to jarring noise-rock. He uses EXTREMELY unconventional guitar tunings, to the point that the thing doesn't seem tuned at all, and his lyrics often resemble the quasi-poetic musings of a lunatic.

Jandek alone on electric guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYNfPkM5O7M

And here's the trailer for the documentary "Jandek on Corwood": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbjlBHl4OKk

The Lamentations of Jeremiah has been called the most beautiful music ever written.

"Slider" by Bruce Kaphan is ambient pedal steel, desert driving kind of music.

121. Nick Cave is excellent.
He did a side project (though it was with most of the Bad Seeds) called Grinderman last year. Grittier and nastier than his normal stuff.

He also wrote the screenplay to the great western movie The Proposition, and did the sparse, moody score to it with Warren Ellis. GFood stuff.

The Proclaimers who sing the World's Best Official Drinking Song entitled 'Oh Jean'.

Actually, they're a really good Scottish duo who are into serious harmonies. As far as I know, only one of their songs got any real airplay (I Would Walk 500 Miles), but their deep cuts are good.

38. I really like the Proclaimers, they did a couple of cuts in SHREK
500 Miles and I'm on My Way

I'm on my way from misery to happiness today
I'm on my way from misery to happiness today
I'm on my way to what I want from this world
And years from now you'll make it to the next world
And everything that you receive up yonder
Is what you gave to me the day I wandered

I took a right, I took a right turning yesterday
I took a right, I took a right turning yesterday
I took the road that brought me to your home town
I took the bus to streets that I could walk down
I walked the streets to find the one I'd looked for
I climbed the stair that led me to your front door

And now that I don't want for anthing
I'd have Al Jolson sing "I'm sitting on top of the world"

I'll do my best, I'll do my best to do the best I can
I'll do my best, I'll do my best to do the best I can
To keep my feet from jumping from the ground dear
To keep my heart from jumping through my mouth dear
To keep the past, the past and not the present
To try and learn when you teach me a lesson

And now that I don't want for anything
I'd have Al Jolson sing "I'm sitting on top of the world".

36. The Dashboard Saviors
G.I.Joe

I was five years old
Home from kindergarten with the flu
I was drinking some kind of powdered orange juice
Saw a man walking on the moon
When I got well I went outside
And walked on it too

But now spring is turning into fall
When I was a kid G.I. Joe
Was 12 inches tall

I was nine years old
In the backyard with the girl next door
And our lips were stained with purple Kool-aid
We wondered what Watergate was for
It ruined momma’s soap operas
We couldn’t watch cartoons

But now spring is turning into fall
When I was a kid G.I. Joe
Was 12 inches tall

We were too young for LSD
No we’re too old for MTV

I was sixteen years old
Crying for a man I’d never met
We sat around singing Beatles songs
Smoked my first cigarette
Those songs had such meaning
Wish I’d known them a little better

Cause now spring is turning into fall
When I was a kid G.I. Joe
Was 12 inches tall

And if anybody out there on the tubes knows John Crist, tell him Angie says hi. :D

"Guitar Hero II" has Parasite as a bonus track, and i guess that was enough to spur them to get things back in motion... they've been playing again around the NorthEast for about a year or so.

Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 11:40 PM by Lydia Leftcoast
Their leader, Thomas Lauderdale, is classically trained, and a real character.

Unfortunately, YouTube seems to have no videos for another great Portland group, Three Legged Torso, although there's one for the Brothers of the Baladi:

Here's a group I was once in long before Portland. These women are much better than the singers of my generation were.

The Sword - Great sludge rock. It's a lot like Black Sabbath.
The Sword

3 Inches of Blood - Picture a bunch of guys that played way too Dungeons & Dragons who were also very good musicians! :)

For a change of pace, here are a two industrial/synth goth groups that I think are very good.

Assemblage 23

I've been listening to DT about since their inception. I first heard them in '91 I think. Opeth I got turned onto late, but have since gone back and gotten their whole collection. Love them too. BTBAM I first heard when Alaska came out and I have been hooked. There are some very talented young men. I'd probably be stand out in one of their concerts. I am probably a bit older than most of the crowd. I turn 40 next month.

72. I met Dory Previn in about 1969.
When she was still married to Andre.
And he was the conductor of the Houston Symphony.

Somewhere along the way he started chasing Mia Farrow and he got canned from the Symphony by the blue-haired old ladies with oil money.

After they fired him he went to the London Symphony Orchestra and Pittsburgh. Houston was slumming for him.

A kid I once housed when he needed a friend dug up a couple volumes of her poetry/song lyrics from a used book store. When he gave them to me as a way of thanks, I knew he really understood who I was and what all I was going through at the time. Hope he read her stuff. Lots of life lessons there.

78. The Miserere by Gregorio Allegri (text Psalm 51)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZL3POaATn8

It was forbidden to transcribe this work, or to release the sheet music, as this piece was considered to be too sensuous. It was not to be transcribed or released on pain of excommunication.

When Mozart was 14 years old, in 1770, he heard the work in Rome at Saint Peter's in the Sistine Chapel, with his father Leopold, on Wednesday of Holy Week. He left, transcribed it, and then came back for the second performance on Good Friday, to check his work.

This is confirmed by family letters from Leopold and Nannerl. He gave it to Dr. Charles Burney who published it in London in 1771. After this it was allowed to be published.

Also done by the Tallis Scholars and the Choir of New College, Oxford.

110. It wouldn't be that hard for a musically talented person to transcribe
because even though it's long, it basically repeats the same two themes in almost exactly the same harmonies over and over, and the intervening parts are standard Gregorian chant.

My choir sings it every Ash Wednesday while the congregation are getting their ashes.
