2. My sympathies.
My experience with such a-holes is that they never hear the dog barking.

My advice: Check into local noise ordinances and see if you can get any relief that way. We had neighbors like that for 17 years. When the neighbor below us called the police, and the dog attacked the officer, they finally moved away. Good riddance.

3. Buy some dog bones.
Throw them over the fence. Whatever is your neighbor’s trouble? Take care of the dog.

5. i don't think he's abused, just upset being stuck outside. i don't blame him.

but i really don't see the point of having a dog if he's just going to be tied up outside all the time.

7. We know the power of food.
It will solve your problem. A win, win. Barking dogs can be a solution or a problem, if there is no problem, give the guy a break, throw him a biscuit. Works every time. Make a friend.

8. Try giving him a biscuit. series.
I know your neighbors are misdirected, that doesn’t preclude them from keeping a dog, spare the dog, as much as you can. Pets are not so separate from us, quite the opposite, while he is not your responsibility, he has been placed in your path. I know I am preaching to the choir, however, I like a prompting/reminder, just to know I am not alone. Plus, no kidding, biscuits will calm the dog.

She goes into hyper overdrive when my father comes over because she knows he always has a treat for her. Not all tricks work for all dogs. :)

should keep him busy for a while. Are they the type of people that can
be talked with reasonably? Surely they hear the dog unless they're working
nights, or something. My sympathy. z

12. I'm all for being civil about it, but a person should not have to get out...
of bed in the middle of the night, find and feed a treat to someone elses dog. If you're like me, once I've been awakened in the middle of the night, I have a very hard time going back to sleep and I'm not in a great mood the next day. If that continues night after night, I'd be sleep deprived and would probably tend to be less civil. But please, not that you would, dont take it out on the dog.

13. What kind of relationship do you have with the neighbors now?
Have you ever had to deal with them before? Have they been responsive?

Even though they do sound like inconsiderate assholes, clearly conveying that to them isn't going to help. While you should be able to just go over there and say "Your dog is keeping me up at night and is violating this ordnance so fix it, damn it!" the reality is that diplomacy is necessary. I would approach them with the attitude that there is some good reason why they have started keeping the dog outside and you'd like to work with them to see if there is a way to resolve the problem in a way that makes everyone happy.

Something along the lines of:

Hi, my name is KG and I live over there. For the past # of nights I've been woken up by a dog barking (or had trouble falling asleep) and its been a real problem because - give them some real concrete issue that they can empathize with ... its making me late for work and I'm afraid I'll lose my job or whatever ... make something up if you have to. It seems to be your dog that I'm hearing barking. I came over to see if we could figure out a way to resolve this problem.

Of course, they can still be dicks about it in which case rent or borrow a video camera that enables you to video tape the dog at night barking with sound. Amass some ironclad evidence showing that it is their dog and it is barking at night and then get the city involved.

16. why go to all that fucking trouble? besides, what if you tell the
neighbor and he figures "tough shit" and continues to leave the dog outside.

why not make an anonymous call to the cops and let them handle it. this way, if the neighbor is pissed, they won't know who to take revenge on.

34. My impression is that the OP
was looking for alternatives to the "just call the cops" option. Perhaps it would be difficult for the OP to remain anonymous which would make going to the cops a surefire way of starting a war (which the OP explicitly doesn't want). Perhaps the OP doesn't trust the local cops. I was providing a non-cop option that would be more likely to be successful.

29. I agree. Gotta' try a civil approach first, just in case it works. I'd do it in person, and
just say "the sound is projecting my way and I can hear it all night."

They might just take care of it.

If not, call the police.

15. i'd just call the police--tell them you want to be anonymous
Edited on Sun Mar-23-08 01:06 AM by orleans
that will be that.

on edit:
i've done it on a few occassions--for dogs of various neighbors

i don't want to get into a pissing contest with them--and i figure if they are inconsiderate to their own pet (especially on freezing cold, sub zero nights) fuck that. they aren't going to be any more considerate to me.

i let the cops take care of it.

and we all get along fine, thank you very much.

19. How about an anonymous note in their mailbox? Surely you aren't the only one that is annoyed
Then, if that doesn't work, I would check the local noise ordinance and call the cops if necessary. I also like the suggestion about a microphone and a Marshall amp!

23. well, i thought i'd give 'em a chance to be cool, before i called in the stormtroopers.
I crossed the desert on a dining car
In the spring of ninety-one
I met some people drinking at the bar
They were laughing having fun
I told 'em that I hadn't heard the joke
That was so hilarious
They said that I was just a dumb cowpoke
I didn't want to make a fuss

CHORUS:
So I shot 'em down
One by one
Then I left 'em 'long the rails
I use my gun
Whenever kindness fails

The moon was in the sign of Scorpio
The sun was at my back
I didn't know how far the train would go
Until the law would find my track
I saw the brakeman and the engineer
Drinking wine and eating brie
I asked 'em who would brake and who would steer
They started pointing back at me

CHORUS

I only have a moment to explain
Just a chance to let you know
When it's time for you to board the train
There are two ways you can go
You can ride the wheels into the sun
Feel the wind upon your face
Or you can laugh into a loaded gun
And you'll likely lose your place

CHORUS

When I use my gun
That lonesome whistle wails

30. You don't want to get into a multi-year war. If you think they're at all sane, politely let them
know it's very loud all night. Give them a chance to save face, by blaming it on the acoustics or something.

They might just take care of it.

If not, call the police next time.

31. I have a neighbor who did that when we first moved here.
The dog has since quietened down and now only barks when it sees or hears something out of the ordinary, like interlopers in the yard. It was hard for a while, but the dog eventually calmed down and became a great watch dog. He only barks now when he sees or hears something we need to deal with. Good dog, bad owners though. They should either do that from the get go or keep the dog inside if it is used to being inside. Pick one and stick with it. It confuses the dog and frustrates the neighbors otherwise. Good luck.
