with Jimmy Stewart as that lovable drunk, Elwood P. Dowd and his pooka--Harvey. Love that movie. So our Christmas tradition is Jimmy in "It's a Wonderful Life" and Easter Jimmy in "Harvey." Let's see what other holidays could we watch Jimmy movies?
Lincoln's Birthday (President's Day): "Of Human Hearts" (1938) Jimmy has a heart to heart with Abe Lincoln in this one. Lincoln tells him to be good to his elderly mama.
Fourth of July: "How the West Was Won" (1962) all-star cast in MGM extravaganza about the men and women who built the west. Jimmy plays a fur trapper who falls in love with Carroll Baker, daughter of Agnes Moorehead and Karl Malden.
Veteran's Day: Jimmy, unlike draft dodging Duke Wayne, did serve with distinction in WWII, but also unlike "Duke" he routinely turned down making war pictures because he didn't want to exploit war in that way. However, he did do one semi-war picture "Shenandoah" (1965) about the brutality of the American Civil War and divided family.
Columbus Day: "Cheyanne Autumn" (1964) late John Ford directed film about the American atrocities against native Americans.
Labor Day: "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" (1962) a family takes a holiday vacation to the sea shore where they meet one misadventure after another. Maureen O'Hara co-stars.
Thanksgiving Day: "Navy Blue and Gold" (1937) Jimmy as a football player for the Naval Academy.
New Years Day: "The Glenn Miller Story" (1954) Jimmy as the famous American swing bandleader whose plane later disappeared over the English Channel during WWII.
