I need to buy a new Garbage Disposal - any recommendations
The one I have I think was pretty old to begin with (it came with the house) and I want to upgrade.

4. Not in your home, under it.
What could be more fun than keeping them on a chain and feeding them garbage-especially after all the garbage they've been spewing out for years.

5. Make sure someone's actually going to install it before you buy.
That's my best tip.

We bought a garbage disposal in Dec. 1999. It's still sitting next to the freezer in the box. Mister Punctual keeps saying that's one of his next projects. I think it's going to tie with the tub surround that took 15 years to finally install.

6. I recommend that you skip it. They pollute water.
Here in the southeast we're experiencing a drought of crisis proportions. They're talking about banning installation of garbage disposals in all new houses.

Once crap gets into the water, it's difficult to get it back out. It's much better to compost your leftover vegetables. If you can't do that, then it's actually better to throw the vegetable clippings away in your trash than to grind them up in your water.

Just sayin.

7. I live in a rowhom with very little backyard for composting
And most of the time I throw away vegetables. But disposals are nice that if something gets down there you can grind it up and get rid of it.

8. I know. I live in a tiny condo myself. There are worm bins.
My worm composting buddy swears that everyone should have a worm bin under their sink, where the worms stay toasty, but I couldn't do it. Mine went outside and then one winter I forgot to feed the worms and...

9. Also, they can cause major problems for city sewer
systems and even septic systems. Disposals increase the amount of fat getting into sewer/septic systems by 20% or so on average. Many people dispose of greasy and fatty food waste in disposals that otherwise wouldn't end up in the wastewater flow. This can lead to accumulation and clogging as well as other "downstream" problems in the wastewater treatment processes.

10. I'd get me one of them newfangled steam-powered ones!
The new ones are real efficient - only takes a quarter ton of coal to get it 'em and running!
