:( My sister (who's a year and a half younger than I am) started having heart palpitations as she and her husband were getting the kids ready for church yesterday. They were supposed to come to my house for lunch at 2 PM (I don't do the church thing), but my brother-in-law called me and told me they would have to cancel. They live an hour away from me, and they were headed to the hosiptal. I jumped in my car and drove to the hospital and met them there. My sis was still having irregular heart rhythms and was freaking out when I got there. After about two hours in the waiting room, her heart calmed down and felt normal. Her blood pressure (185/101) was through the roof, though, and when they finally took her in, they put her on a heart monitor. The docs there diagnosed her with supraventricular tachycardia. They gave her beta blockers, which helped a lot, and sent her home with a heart monitor when her blood pressure was normal again. She goes to a cardiologist tomorrow for further treatment.
My sister has always had more health issues than I have, but at 43, she's still young. High blood pressure runs in our family, and she and I are both on medication for it. She doesn't smoke or do drugs, and she drinks only occasionally. However, the doctors asked her about her stress levels, and her stress levels have been astronomical over the past few months. She's got two kids, ages 7 and 9, and the 9-year-old has special needs. My sister knocks herself out taking care of them, and the docs told her this was a wake-up call to start taking better care of herself. She hasn't been exercising at all, and she eats a lot of junk food.
This was also a wake-up call for me...the past year or so has been ultra-stressful for me as well, but the last couple of months have been a lot better. However, stress isn't good for anyone, and I need to do what I can to keep it as low as possible.
Just a word to all of you...take care of yourselves, because a scare like this isn't pretty. :( She thought she was having a heart attack, and thankfully it wasn't, but anything can happen.
