Post a lyric from a musical -- then dare someone to identify the musical!
I dare you to identify the musical that this is from:

It's Braves and Giants 2 to 2
The pitcher's name is Hub Perdue
Jack Murray's now up at bat . . . .

My god! Would somebody look at that!

It's from the "work in progress" by David St Hubbins in This is Spinal Tap.

So here's one:

There's water that you part,
Water that you walk on,
Water that you turn to wine,
But water from a rock -- Lord, what a miracle!
This is a miracle that's divine.

114. DINGDINGDINGDINGDING!
The show is very timely for today, what with recession looming in a US run by corrupt politicians. If only there weren't those book problems, it would be nice if Anyone Can Whistle were revived. I saw a concert version here in January, which was a momentous occasion for me because now I've finally seen productions of every one of Sondheim's musicals, and he's been my mentor for 27 years. Took me long enough, eh?

The show I really want to see revived is The Golden Apple, because then we might get a complete recording of Jerome Moross's score at long last. The existing OC album has only about half of the music (the show is completely sung). I can't even find the score anywhere, so I don't know what half of the songs sound like.

I'm mentioning this because I get the feeling you're a big musical fan.

118. Never heard of The Golden Apple,
so I don't know as much as I'd like to. I've loved Anyone Can Whistle ever since I heard the album back in HS, and you're right, it's a timely show for today, with its mix of religion, economics, politics and conformity. But the purely escapist part of me has been longing for a revival of On the 20th Century -- I never got to see the original and it's got such a great, fun score.

Try this:

Like a perfumed woman,
The wind blows in the bunkhouse.
Like a perfumed woman,
Smellin' of where she's been.

Smellin' of Oregon cherries,
Or maybe Texas avocados,
Or maybe Arizona sugar-beets.

The wind blows in,
And she sings to me 'cause I'm one of her ramblin' kin.

Sometimes, the world is black.
And tears run from your eyes.
And maybe we'll all get really sick.
And maybe we'll all die.
So...

Let's build a snowman!
We can make him our best friend.
We can name him Tom or we can name him George!
We can make him tall, or we can make him not so tall.
Snowman!

"With a little plan you can change your life to-day
You dont have to spend your life addicted to smack
Homeless on the streets giving handjobs for crack..."

Different song, same movie:

Children are crying
Politicians are lying, too

Cancer is killing
Texaco is spilling
The whole world's gone to hell

100. It's one of my all time favourites. I have two different versions on CD,
the OC album, which I like because of Barbara Cook, and the red-covered two-disc one that Bernstein did shortly before his death, which I like for its completeness. I also have the vinyl version of the smaller Hal Prince production. I don't have the Livent production with Andrea Martin as the Old Lady.

As to the one I left you, think "Irish". Sure, and I'll give you another song from the show:

Oh, my heart is beating wildly
And it's all because you're here.
When I'm not near the girl I love,
I love the girl I'm near.

Any femme that flutters by me
Is a flame that must be fanned.
When I can't fondle the hand that I'm fond of,
I fondle the hand at hand.

My heart's in a pickle. It's constantly fickle,
And not too partickle, I fear.
When I'm not near the girl I love
I love the girl I'm near!

64. Very well done! And damifyou aren't right about "Make Them Hear You!"
Very well said.

Since I saw Ragtime, I've always wanted to sing the role of Emma Goldman.

...and although they called it "the crime of the century,"
Goldman knew it was only 1906

and there were ninety-four years to go!

53. My pleasure
Mine will come as a surprise to me.
Mine I lead to chance and chemistry.

Female(spoken) Chemistry?
Male (spoken) Yeah, chemistry.

Suddenly I'll know when my love comes along
I'll know then and there
I'll know at the sight of her face
How I care, how I care, how I care
And I'll stop. And I'll stare.

At least I think it's 1992. It's Peter Gallagher (Sky), Josie de Guzman (Sarah), Faith Prince (Adelaide), Nathan Lane (Nathan Detroit), and Walter Bobbie (Nicely-Nicely Johnson).

85. I can hear the warm baritone of Robert Preston as...
Ben Franklin in Paris

My turn:

Before Lord God made the sea and the land,
He held all the stars in the palm of his hand,
And they fell through his fingers like grains of sand,
And one little star fell alone.

Then the Lord God hunted through the wild night air
For the little lost star on the wind down there,
And he pledged and he promised he'd take special care,
So it wouldn't get lost again.

Sons of shame and sorrow,
Will you cheer tomorrow
For the crown of Burgundy?
Onward! Onward! Swords against the Foe
Forward! Forward the lily banners go!
Sons of France around us,
Break the chain that bound us,
And to Hell with Burgundy!

87. This one is hard unless you know it, in which case it's easy.
My ship has sails that are made of silk.
The decks are trimmed with gold.
And of jam and spice, there's a paradise
In the hold.

My ship's aglow with a million pearls
And rubies fill each bin.
The sun sits high in a sapphire sky
When my ship comes in.

I could wait the years till he appears
One fine day one spring,
But the pearls and such, they won't mean much,
If there's missing just one thing.

I do not care if that day arrives.
That dream need never be,
If the ship I sing doesn't also bring
My own true love to me,
If the ship I sing doesn't also bring
My own true love to me.

I'm gonna love Show Boat till I die.

In the '60s, Tom Lehrer wrote the song "Pollution" for That Was the Week that Was, which includes the lines:

See the halibuts and the sturgeons
Being wiped out by detergeons.
Fish gotta swim and birds gotta fly,
But they don't last long if they try.

Yes, I devoured Camelot, Gypsy, West Side Story, The King and I etc when I was a kid -- on vinyl! I think "The Seven Deadly Virtues" was side 2, cut 2, right after "If Ever I Would Leave You", but I could be wrong about that.
