When the harasser responds "I was just joking, I didn't mean it ... (ad nauseam), just repeat.

That word, that joke, what you said (etc.) makes me feel uncomfortable.

If you keep it up, all but the most dimwitted will get it and back off.

You should NOT have to put up with being called names and harassed by thugs.

I have used this technique many times as I spent years employed in a male dominated profession.
