Am I the only one that likes MacArthur Park?

Spring was never waiting for us, girl
It ran one step ahead
As we followed in the dance
Between the parted pages and were pressed
In love's hot, fevered iron
Like a striped pair of pants

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I recall the yellow cotton dress
Foaming like a wave
On the ground around your knees
The birds, like tender babies in your hands
And the old men playing checkers by the trees

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

There will be another song for me
For I will sing it
There will be another dream for me
Someone will bring it
I will drink the wine while it is warm
And never let you catch me looking at the sun
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
You'll still be the one

I will take my life into my hands and I will use it
I will win the worship in their eyes and I will lose it
I will have the things that I desire
And my passion flow like rivers through the sky
And after all the loves of my life
After all the loves of my life
I'll be thinking of you
And wondering why

MacArthur's Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!
Oh, no
No, no
Oh no!!

8. Greatest song ever written. Unparralled lyric imagery.
but the real MacArthur Park in Los Angeles was a seriously scary drug-and-gang market for many years.

10. I like it
But I posted just a few hours ago about liking the song "Get Dancin'" by Disco Tex and the Sex-o-Lettes so I'm probably no help to the credibility of "MacArthur Park" fans!

11. I'd heard rumors of how bad this song is, but now
I have heard for myself what an utter disaster it is. One less thing for me to wonder about. Thanks!

12. I have always loved that song.

I still stop what I am doing and listen to it. I always saw it as a missed chance someone was mourning, a beautiful tribute to a lost love. I can't explain the feeling it gave me but it touched me emotionally.

15. Aw shit! You just reminded me...
I made a really dippy student film using "MacArthur Park" as the theme when I was in college. It wound up being based entirely on food.

I had several cakes (didn't occur to me back then merely to rerun that segment) on which I turned the hose, chorus by chorus, so the cake would melt "out in the rain" and we used my boyfriend's roommate's face in an extreme closeup while we slowly fed him things. Just stuff. Regular food. Cut veggies. Cheese. Pieces of fruit. Salad. A marshmallow or two. Fries, slices of pickle, and so forth. Two hands coming in, on either side of his face, slowly putting pieces of food into his mouth. There were some brief interruptions in which my then-boyfriend and I were vamping it up a little in the front yard, but otherwise, it was all on this guy Rich's face. Wonderful face, too - long with a high forehead and thinning hair on top, and a full beard that made it look even longer, and the whole lower part of his face would be moving up and down as his jaws moved, 'cause he spent the whole time chewing the food. Otherwise his head was still. And he had his annoying cheap mirrored aviator sunglasses on the whole time. His part of it was continuous, all the way through the song, and he kept chewing throughout, and he didn't have a chance to stop and swallow between bites. His face just got fuller and fuller and fuller and fuller while he kept chewing, until there literally was food sticking out of it because we couldn't fit anything more into his mouth. A great moment with that final small but leafy stalk of celery evenly bobbing up and down as I recall! Fortunately, by the time we got to the point of overflow, the song ended. Mercifully, too, I should say, at least for my friend Rich!

I don't know where that film is now. Long gone for sure. It's been 30-some years. But it made my teacher chuckle out loud when I turned it in. It was mighty fun to do!

It took me a little while to figure out what she was talking about. It finally came to me one night when I was drunk.

23. Initially thought it was pretentious B.S. but kept growing on me...
some moments of silly overblown lyrics and singing, but overall I came to appreciate how well constructed, arranged and performed it was.

24. Loved Maynard's version (instrumental) on the "Live at Jimmy's" album. :)
Which Columbia wouldn't allow to be reissued for THIRTY YEARS :grr:

http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Castle/2685/maynard.html

These only got released on CD in the very last years of Maynard's life.

But those lyrics ... that's the Sixties drug culture talking.
