Mesh Speedos do not belong in the gym pool...ever
A mid40s gentleman has started swimming at the gym, and, unfortunately, it looks like he tends to use the pool at about the same time I am generally there. He is not much of a swimmer, but he really, really loves wearing skimpy bathing suits. His first one was one of those ultra tiny Speedos that look like the bottom half of a bikini.

This week he has premiered a new look. One that has given me nightmares about lap swimming in the future. A fully mesh speedo with a tiny piece of white spandex to cover the, um, "dangly bits".

On the plus side, I'm swimming much faster now, as I'm trying to get through my workout before he hits the pool.

3. I have to look straight at the bottom of the pool when I swim now
I looked up to make sure no one was crossing my lane on Monday, and, unfortunately, he was in my line of sight.

Doing the breaststroke.

2. They don't have a dress code?
You should complain to management about it. That's disgusting. A mess Speedo. :puke:

4. Gym is a "no lifeguards on duty" one
I honestly don't even know how to start that conversation with the front desk ("OK, imagine this delicious fruit smoothie you have at your store is a naked blonde man. Now, imagine this piece of netting from the tennis net is all that he is wearing. Do you think you could do something about that?").

'Seriously, there's a dude in there wearing a mesh speedo barely covering his goods. He's scaring the children"

I will do so tomorrow.

9. Good for you!
I would think there would have to be one. There's one thing about wearing a speedo, that in general wouldn't bother me, my dad wore speedoes. But a mess thing barely concealing your privates? That's not appropriate for a gym.

I am trying to juggle some things and get over there tomorrow afternoon instead of evening, though.

10. Good luck with the management.
If there is a dress code I hope they enforce it.

I don't really have anything against speedos, or even mesh ones. I don't know if it would bother me. But if it's bothering a lot of other people then how hard is it for him to wear a pair of trunks?

13. OK, maybe it's because it's late here
But I really don't understand the problem. Are you worried about his pubic hair in the pool?

15. Eh, I was primarily starting the thread about witnessing an unpleasant sight in a joking manner
Thinking about it more as people responded I did wonder whether it warranted complaining to the management, but in the end I just found it amusing.

This just confirms that I will never understand the loathing some men have for the sight of men's genitals.

30. I think it would be best to just be amused.
It doesn't sound like the guy is breaking any laws. There's a big park by my parents house where I used to go for morning walks when I lived there. Often times, the only other guy in the park that early in the morning was a fat middle-aged man jogging in nothing but a speedo and tennis shoes. At first I thought it was a little weird (oh, and he had shaved his legs and body hair), but once he and I saw each other enough times to know that we were the two weirdos (It should be noted that I'd go for this walks with a hot thermos of coffee and cigarettes) we'd just say hello and go about our routines.

Even if this guy is causing a minor disturbance, I always think it's better to change things by example than by complaining.

14. Oh my...
Basic fact of life is that very few people look good in the really skimpy stuff, of either gender. I take is that this gentleman is not one of them.

Unfortunately, unless they can manage to have some minimum requirement of the number of square inches a bathing suit is, you might be SOL, my friend.

19. German spa pool. No bathing suits.
Grannies and geezers.
Hotties and hunks.
Even little kiddies.

Took a little getting used to, but I liked it.
There's nothing like being joined in a smallish steam bath by 4 attractive young German women who find out I'm an American and want to practice their English.
All of us totally nude.
After the initial shock, you get over it...get beyond it.

There was even a little bar at the health club where you could enjoy a good local beer. The patrons did wrap a towel 'round in there though.

you go in the dressing room and there is every manner of body in full glory. You (okay, I) got used to it quickly. We had an Austrian visitor here a few summers ago. He was thin & he wore a bright-blue speedo. A large T shirt over it all. He may have looked like a bookmark but he was completely unselfconscious about it, which I appreciated. I wouldn't know how to explain the "net" speedo, though. It seems to lack dignity.

25. I used to belong to a clothing-optional resort in Topanga Canyon
that, and having done lots of nude co-ed swimming in the sixties and seventies, before people got uptight again, makes it a non-issue for me.

It really is no big deal.

27. So, you have a problem with our neighbors to the North?
Southern Maine beaches are known for the influx of overweight men in skimpy European style swimsuits. Typically occurs around Canada day and involves people going into water too cold for the locals.

If it meets the bare minimums of decency and could be concidered current fashion in any of a number of countries. Then more power to him. No reason to conform to some puritan standard unless your also willing to require female swimsuits to provide equivalent coverage.
