What was the last movie you saw?
Today, I re-watched "Suddenly, Last Summer", a movie I got from Netflix. I've seen it before, but it's so wonderfully over the top...screenplay by Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams, based on Williams' play...Katharine Hepburn as rich Mrs. Venable, Elizabeth Taylor, looking gorgeous as usual, as the institutionalized niece of Mrs. Venable (and who's scheduled to be lobotomized), Montgomery Clift as the doctor who is to perform the lobotomy on Elizabeth Taylor's character...and the unseen Sebastian Venable, the gay son of Mrs. Venable, but of course they couldn't actually refer to his homosexuality in Production Code Hollywood. Rape, incest and cannibalism(!) are referred to, without actually uttering the words. Ah, Tennessee Williams...fun for the entire family! :-)

It is about a man named William Wilberforce who is trying to get the slave trade abolished in England in the late 1700's. It was a great movie.

7. Barbarian Invasions
About a son who reluctantly reunites with his dying father. He bribes hospital officials to get good care for him. Finds a junkie to supply heroin to ease his pain better than morphine. Brings together his father's former wife & mistresses & friends. Sounds pretty grim, huh? Actually kind of bittersweet. What would we be willing to do for those we love?

21. Somewhere in my online internet travels I saw an interview
posted on some site with Kevin Smith discussing this movie. I lived in Meridian, Missippi for a few months and attended a navy school after I got out of boot camp in San Diego. what a scary place for somebody like me who was brought up in the northeast and had just come out of the closet in Boston the year before! That was the town that had the bar named "Crossroads" that the lesbian couple ended up buying and naming "Different Seasons".

I found "Juno" available to watch on one of those streaming video movies sites somebody posted a link to here at DU. it's one of those "camcorder in the movie theater" mediocre quality versions. I found "The Other Boleyn Girl" on the same site. THAT was a good movie also.

I forgot to mention in my first post that I like "Suddenly Last Summer" also. it is always mentioned on the famous gay movie documentaries. very strange movie for it's day.

12. I finally got around to watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
And I gotta say... what the fuck was the director thinking? He spent more time on fancy effects shots than he did on plot development.

Flying ghostly death eaters? Nice long shots of the castle from afar, after he just spent 10 seconds on something that should have had a minute of dialogue to explain what was going on to the viewer? What the hell? You'd think with a book series that big, they'd at least put a little effort into making the movies work. And with the number of people out there who don't read, you'd think they'd do a good enough job with exposition so that the people who haven't read the book would know what the hell was going on. There were numerous times when I said to myself, "It's a good thing I already know what's going on, otherwise I woulda been frikkin' LOST right there."

The kids and a few of the other actors did a good job, but that's about it.

23. No Country for Old Men. Didn't like it.
I've always looked to the Coen bro's for a mordant sense of humour and irony, like Fargo and Big Lebowski. The former has some pretty gruesome scenes, but you find yourself laughing.

No Country has none of the irony and dark humour. I am totally confounded as to how it won best pic.

And also: I love Daniel Day Lewis. Hotness that melted the screen in "The Last of the Mohicans" and brilliant intensity in "My Left Foot" and "The Name of the Father". But WTF was the point of "There will be Blood"??? That movie was a total waste of my time!

irony or humour.

But I agree, it is inconceivable to me that it won Best Picture. And I still haven't received an answer I believe.

ON EDIT: I'm still waiting for some sort of explanation as to why "No Country for Old Men" deserved the acclaim it received. I truly am baffled by it--and I'm a collector of McCarthy's works (first editions). I just don't get it.

82. I was certain my aunt was mistaken
I saw the movie a few weeks ago. Later that night I mentioned the movie to my aunt, who said it won best picture. That sounded preposterous. The movie I saw had plenty of suspense but was extremely predictable and didn't threaten Oscar caliber. I didn't want to hurt her feelings by telling her she had to be wrong. Then I Googled and nearly fell off the chair when it was verified. Even more absurd was Juno among the other nominees. Juno featured the most tortured and forced elongated dialog of any movie I've seen in at least a decade.

26. In a theater, "There Will Be Blood," and on DVD "American Gangster."
Both films were good, but "There Will Be Blood" was far, far superior and is so far my favorite movie of 2007. "American Gangster" was a competent but derivative remake of "French Connection" meets "Heat" meets "Scarface" meets "The Insider."

85. I'm kind of dreading seeing There Will be Blood on video
I'm probably going to have to buy it, because I loved it in the theater, but I'm worried about how it will translate to the smaller screen.

Normally when I think of movies that are so much better on the big screen than on TV I think of special effects fare--stuff that's kind of amazing or thrilling writ large, but doesn't have the substance/story to sustain interest in the living room. But with TWBB, Daniel Day-Lewis was a special effect unto himself--I'll never forget seeing that last scene with Daniel Plainview so much larger than life. I hope the smaller version on my television can compare :)

Edited on Sat Mar-29-08 07:45 PM by jonnyblitz
by Gus Van Sant. The other two in the "trilogy" were Elephant(which one the Palme D'or award at Cannes), and Last Days, which is loosely based on Kurt Cobain. all three movies were a bit off but interesting to watch though often weak or missing something.

when the security guy was split in half by the train and the first half of his body was crawling towards the boy was off. I forget to mention in my other post that Elephant (the first of the trilogy) was loosely based on the Columbine shooting. All three are interesting to watch, though incomplete in some way. I know exactly what you mean. He seems to like to make movies about teen boy issues.

Wonderful black and white, romanticizing World War II. Burt Lancaster was almost a Clint Eastwood type of character playing the tough guy. I happen to like B&W as the emphasis was on acting and plot, not shock, sound effects and spectacular visual.

Colin Farrell stars as a screw up Irish hitman hiding out in Belgium while waiting for the boss to give him the all clear to come back to England. It's pretty funny but also has a bit of violence.

"The Good Shepard" (CIA man played by Matt Damon)was the most recent on the small tube.

I always get "stuck" watching even a little of it if I notice it while channel surfing. As a child, I was a big horror fan and when I first saw Suddenly, I figured it was a horror movie. I wasn't half wrong cuz Hepburn's description of the incident in the Encantadas still sends a shiver down my spine.

Actually, I don't remember what planet his character's character is from (that will make sense when you see the movie) but they eat bugs there. :)

98. Whoever wrote this episode should DIE!!! :P
"What is this thing? I mean, it serves no useful purpose for there to be a bunch of chompy, crushy things in the middle of a hallway. No, I mean we shouldn't have to do this, it makes no logical sense, why is it here?"

"'Cause it's on the television show."

"Well forget it! I'm not doing it! This episode was badly written! "

Just about the saddest episode of made for TV movies I have ever seen.

Colonel Ty is the most complex character I have ever seen.

55. The last movie I saw in a theater was _Juno_
I actually saw it a couple of times, b/c I first went to see it with my friends and then with my sister. But I guess that's been a couple of months now... I usually see movies more often, but this just hasn't been much of a year so far for movies, I guess. Or maybe just not for movies I care much about.

Last movies I rented were the very good Into the Wild and the middlin' to slightly not-so-good horror flick Vacancy.

72. Still considering that one.
I had it in my head where it was going in terms of an ethical message and it just missed it by an inch or two. The actors do a pretty darned good job with their characters and the story is gripping. But not exactly original. In the end I experienced more of a primal shrug than a primal scream...either of elation or despair. The appeal of this one is entirely up to personal taste I'm afraid. Can't recommend it or pan it completely.

87. The 20th Anniversary Special Edition of Robocop
It seems just like yesterday when I first saw Robocop. It was in the Andrews Theater in Berlin, having played three days at the Clayallee theater. I remember the gunfire, the senseless murders, the screams of the children whose parents took them to the most violent movie in the history of cinema.

88. On DVD: "Death at a Funeral."
I would have liked it more if they had been able to resist inserting the scatological bit.

In the theater: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, which is entertaining fun with serious undertones. Frances McDormand and Amy Adams are wonderful, and of course I enjoyed seeing a cast full of the usual suspects (Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Stephanie Cole, Katy Murphy, Shirley Henderson).

Now I've got Jindabyne from Netflix, and I'm going to see The Other Boleyn Girl at a matinee.
