1. I'd tell them
I would learn to live with that loss. And, I barely drink alcohol at all.

 Except that their motivation was, at least, honest, as PeaceNikki has pointed out. The same can't be said for today's Freepers.

12. Those were great women. They saw the effect alcohol had on the families
of the poor and they put a stop to it. They cared. They worked hard. And only when child services had caught up with the need did alcohol become legal again. IMHO. And I'm an alcoholic.

22. True, true.
And I have seen footage of one of them ruefully admitting later that, like it or not, Prohibition had failed, creating more problems than it solved.

24. But by the time prohibition had ended AA was about to be invented
and children's services were sprouting up all over the country so children could be cared for or interventions could take place if all the household money was going to booze.

28. Prohibition was a *disaster* for alcoholics and their families
Bootleggers would deliver the booze and extend credit, something liquor stores never had done before that time. Also, it was often of doubtful quality, adulterated with other substances that would make you sick or kill you even faster the pure fire water would - such as lead, benzene and wood alcohol. And a lot of income that would otherwise have been taxed lined the pockets of gangsters.

That's why I'm rather dubious about our present War on Drugs. Those ladies meant well, but it didn't work then, and it's not working now.

Some of the older stories in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous describe this in detail. No one dried out solely because of the Noble Experiment. I know because I'm one too.

31. Yes to bootlegging was a serious issue. But at least those ladies
cared enough when there were no social services to try and do something. I'm sure more than one impoverished American family was saved by the laws. It just didn't work out over the long term. There are still (or were still a few years ago) towns in Canada that were dry. Not that we ever had prohibition but we did have lots of temperance societies.

17. Least. Effective. Threat. Ever.
Thank GOD I didn't live in the late-19th - early-20th century.

Ever notice how you very rarely see any pictures from that generation of women smiling? Or really, ANYone smiling, for that matter? Read the book The Good Old Days: They were TERRIBLE by Otto Bettmann. It's quite an eye-opener.

25. I doubt we'd smile either if we had to dress that way
Especially in the summer. I don't know how the women dealt with all those hot clothes. Or the men either: long sleeved shirts and stiff collars.

Random thought: What if you sucked liquor through a straw? 'Cause then your lips technically wouldn't be touching it...right? (Ignore me, I'm in a weird mood today.) :hi:

Two guys were sitting in a bar.

First guy: Why's Bill so grumpy?
Second guy: Aww, his wife left him.
First guy: How come?
Second guy: 'Cos of his drinking.
First guy: Bartender! Six boilermakers!

Take it as you will...

30. Any sane person's lips would have to touch a lot of liquor to even consider those ladies.
The only one who appears even remotely approachable is the woman at the upper right. Probably because she also looks somewhat out-of-place.
