"Evicted" for a couple of days...
We're getting new floors throughout the house, and found out (after I get to work) that we won't be able to stay in the house tonight... So I've got to go home to a ransacked house, crawl over furniture to get to my dresser to get some clothes for tomorrow (and possibly another day) and find a place to crash tonight...

On the upside, it's going to be SWEET to get rid of that carpet and pergo! Once it's finished, most of the house (minus bathrooms, dining room, and laundry room) will have vertical-grain bamboo floors...

3. Why can't you stay in your house tonight?
I'm curious because I'm considering installing wood or bamboo floors throughout too.

4. I think it's a combination of things...
Fumes, maybe... and needing to stay off of the prepped slab as much as possible... but mostly that the house is literally ransacked to get all of the furniture out of the rooms that are getting the floors. And the rooms that are keeping their current flooring are now literally floor to ceiling STUFFED full. I think if I really pushed the issue, I could get out the cot and find a place to pitch it, but it'll probably be easier to just crash with a friend.

Then, there's the issue of the dogs... One of them has recently had some seizure problems, so it'll probably be better for her to be away from any fumes. And the other eats (or at least tries to eat) anything that she finds on the floor, so same deal- probably better off away from the activity for the time being.

6. When we installed hardwoods, the issue was the fumes.
And, frankly, the noise is pretty tough to take as well. The fumes were the worst though, that and all the oak dust. It was everywhere.

7. I wish I could have taken off work to help the stay-at-home roomie...
but he's having to orchestrate it on his own.

As I hear, they've prepped the bedroom area of the house, and will install tomorrow and prep the living area. Then the final installation will be on Wednesday, and we'll be finished. Hopefully.

5. Update...
My roommate called to say that they found layers of old flooring underneath the carpet padding AND the Pergo. I gather that it's a vinyl or linoleum (the house is mid-century modern so it could be anything, really). They have to remove it which is supposedly going to be fairly difficult and, subsequently, is (a) going to add to the cost, and (b) going take a little longer. Not too concerned about the added cost- we already budgeted for a certain amount of "unpredictable expense." But I really hate imposing on friends for very long (especially since this just came up today- I really hadn't thought that we wouldn't be able to stay in the house).

Am I weird for being very curious as to what, exactly was under there? My roommate just said it was ugly, but he doesn't appreciate the groovy 50's decor like I do!

10. I'll bet that old flooring has asbestos in it
which is probably why the former owners covered it up. Good luck with it!

11. Quite possible....
But as long as it's not rotted or degraded to the point where the fibers are released from the binder, it shouldn't be a safety issue. I'll know more when I get home to pick up some things.

The house was gutted some years ago and an addition added to the back (new bathroom, laundry room, and closet). I'm assuming that the carpet was installed at this time, as it was a berber weave which was popular back in the mid to late 1990's. I've always hated it.

8. Awesome! Those are going to be beautiful. Although it's not awesome that you
have to sleep somewhere else. Worth it, though.

9. I'm glad that I was able to convince them to go with the bamboo...
Probably one of the best examples of "green" building materials out there, and it will fit the contemporary style of the house perfectly!
