Roger Ebert has lost ability to speak, will not rejoin show
Edited on Tue Apr-01-08 11:26 AM by DS1
CHICAGO — Movie critic Roger Ebert will resume writing reviews later this month, but will not rejoin his syndicated television show because he is still unable to speak.

In a letter published in Tuesday's Chicago Sun-Times, the Pulitzer Prize winning writer and co-host of the "Ebert & Roeper" television show said a January surgery in Houston ended in complications, and his ability to speak was not restored. He said the return of speech would require another surgery.

"But I still have all my other abilities, including the love of viewing movies and writing about them," Ebert said.

Ebert said he is looking forward to his annual film festival at the University of Illinois on April 23.

"I will resume writing movie reviews shortly thereafter," he said.

1. Aw, fuck. That's too bad.
At least he's still able to write, though. :-(

5. There mustn't; the story could be that there is no story. End of story.

6. That really makes me sad...
He was always the smarter, more knowledgeable one of the pair...

Roeper is OK, but not the thinker that Roger is...

We've been watching the show since its earliest incarnation back in the 1960's...

It's a sad day...

:-(

I have to give Ebert more credibility than most other film reviewers as he's the only one (so far as I know of) that has actually written a screenplay. Granted, it was 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls', but still...

:hi:

9. I had a feeling he wouldn't return.
That's a shame. Richard Roeper really isn't a film critic...he started out as a features columnist at the Sun Times.

I suspect that they'll keep the current line-up of Roeper and Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips.

12. Ah, darn. I miss him too.
I always loved Siskel and Ebert. Of course, I cut my teeth on Pauline Kael, whom they both named as their favorite critic ever. I wouldn't see a movie unless Pauline liked it, which meant that I basically went about fifteen years without seeing a movie. The only movie I remember that she liked unequivocally was "Henry and June".
