1. This is totally uncalled for. Please post this at the Pets
and Vegetarian, Vegan and Animal Rights forums.

2. I'm sorry, but it does NOT say the dog was his, it said the dog was in his backyard. nt
I'd call animal control if there was a strange dog in my yard too. It could hurt one of my babies.

4. I didn't see that part, I admit I skimmed it. A.D.D. and all.
If I found a pregnant dog in my back yard, I'd feed it and call around to find it a home. I WILL NOT take it to a shelter. I would just ru it off to fend for itself before I'd take it to a shelter to be killed.

5. DailyKOs says the dog was his and so do other sites...

It specifically says the dog was his.

Also this quote is directly from the first link I posted:

"Senator Williams abandoned his own pregnant dog at the Marion County Animal Shelter, just four days before giving birth. Besides showing that he has little value and no compassion for his own animal, this action makes it glaringly obvious that he does not take his personal responsibilities and commitments seriously."

And yet another link stating the dog was his:

11. it also reports the dog was well fed while the fosters say it was emaciated.
How can we be sure this was his dog until we have a response from him?

12. there are always three sides to every story....
I suppose we just have to wait.

As the owner of a very well loved dog, I noticed only recently how thin she had gotten - only when my mom who had not seen her since the fall arrived and gasped - I just didn't see it. My dog is quite old and is losing weight

I mention this because what some people consider wellfed may be thin to others, etc.

I hope the story is resolved, either way, being an animal lover, I abhor the fact that he took the dog to a kill shelter.

15. I agree. I think we should wait to judge.

As awful as it sounds, sometimes these things are unavoidable. I'm glad I wasn't a pubic figure when we went through something harrowing that on the outside with little or misleading info might have made it seems as if we were heartless. I won't go into the details because they're long and heartbreaking and there's always the chance the people involved might recognize the story if they were to come here. The animals involved did not belong to us. We were trying to help someone during very unfortunate circumstances. Fortunately, things turned out okay and we were able to go rescue them back from the local shelter before they were killed. But it was awful all the way around, and I'll never forget it. I could see how, if I had been a public figure, someone could easily jump to the wrong conclusion without knowing all the facts, or getting the wrong facts.

3. This is my BIGGEST pet peeve.
If you don't want to care for your animal, then leave it where you found it. We are suppose to be the party of compassion. Did he not get the memo? Dem or not this guy is a piece of shit in my book.

My wife and I have no children, can't afford them. Not gonna depend on others to help care for my child. So we have 3 dogs, and they are treated every bit as good as most children. That is why it pisses me off to no end for someone to dump a dog off at a shelter, especially a high kill shelter.

8. all of my pets are rescued animals
and I can't stand the thought of dumping a pregnant (why was this dog not fixed to begin with) dog at a kill shelter no less.

9. Oh, dear God, I hate this kind of thing!
All my guys are rescue, too, and these stories rip my heart out.;(

Also reminds me that I have to call Governor Corzine today about this poor dog who is in danger, again. He attacked a handiman who attacked his mistress and is on death row in NJ. I get so many of these things from my friend in rescue (also a member of DU) and don't do enough, but this one requires action...;(

Congo is in DANGER...AGAIN...Please help!

Congo's hearing is Fri/need letters /emails /phone calls& please spread...

Please, everyone, it is vital that you call, write, or email the judge and sign the petition by Monday (the last day you can sign it) if this poor dog, who was only doing his job, is to continue to live.

"I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."...Gandhi

Congo is in DANGER....................AGAIN...................Please help

Do you rememberCongo, the German Shepherd who is on death row in New Jersey? Well, his appeal case is going to be heard on April 4, 2008! Thiscan decide if he lives or if he dies!!!!Judge Mitchel E. Ostrerwill be hearing the arguments from both sides on Friday April 4th. Address is below.

How to help:

Please write Judge Mitchel Ostrer, polite and professional, letters of support for Congo.

MITCHEL E. OSTRER- his direct phone number - 609-571-4188
Mercer County Courthouse
209 South Broad & Market Streets
PO Box 8068
Trenton, NJ 08650

Mention in your letter or phone call that he needs to take into consideration that the laws are old and they don't take in to consideration how the dog perceived the threat. Also, there is no case law out there in NJ that has interpreted the statutes. This is the first one. Another point to use is that the last case of a dog attack was back in 1994 and the Governor then, Christine Whitman, had pardoned the Akita and he was exiled from the State. This is a last resort option so we can keep him alive.

Monday (tomorrow!!) will be the last day to sign Congo's petition. If you haven't already signed, please do so- there are only 170 signatures on the petition to save Congo's life!

http://www.petitiononline.com/gcd01/petition.html

Also, please consider sending the judge anemailin care of his Team Leader, Michael Stellwag. We don't have Judge Ostrer's email so we can send our note to Mr. Stellwag and ask him to forward the email to the judge orprint it and give to Judge Ostrer- our notes should be polite and respectful, after all, this is the judge that will be deciding Congo's fate.

michael.stellwag@judiciary.state.nj.us

Also, please contact Governor John Corzine at 609-292-6000 and ask the governor to pardon Congo. You can alsoemail him at:

http://www.state.nj.us/governor/govmail.htmland where is says- Select a Topic choose- "Law and Public Safety" and select a Sub-topic, choose- "Pardons and Clemency" and fill in your information to send a note to him. You don't have to live in New Jersey to call or email our governor.

Just to refresh everyone's memory about this outrageous case- Congo is on death row for attacking a landscaper who was told to stay off of the property until the owner could come down and put the dogs away. The landscaper(s) ignored the instructions, entered the property and Congo started barking. The landscaper hit Congo AND his puppies with a rake and then grabbed one of Congo's owners, Elizabeth James, using heras a shield - Congo then bit the landscaper several times- Congo was protecting his family!!!. Congo was sentenced to DEATH (he received an unfair trial that's for sure) and when the public heard about this story and made a lot of noise, Congo's case was heard by a second judge who granted a stay of execution until Congo' date with the NJ Supreme Court.

Everyone, please help Congo by contacting the governor! Also, please feel free to email Congo's family atsavecongo@aol.comand tell Guy and Elizabeth James that you haven't forgotten about Congo.

13. Hope you don't mind, but I also cross-posted in the Pets Group, since I just called Governor Corzine
I was feeling kind of discouraged because I passed on my friend's message to all of my friends and I only know that two of them "took action" on it, and they're all fellow animal lovers. I didn't think of posting this on DU because my friend is also a member here, but the last animal petition that I saw she posted only got replies from me, Joe, Jeanne and Al, and you can imagine how they became aware of it...:-(

Thank you...:hi::hug:

16. Thank you, my friend.
Maybe I should also send my thread to Joe, Jeanne and Al, but I already included them in my e-mail. *sigh*

The thing is, I get so many of these things and certainly sympathize with them. My guys all have sad stories, as you know. My sweet little Sara was on "death row" in Ohio, and just happened to find her way to me. But what can I do about adopting a cat in Georgia? Sometimes it is just overwhelming. Sorry, but these things get to me. And I feel guilty that I'm not doing more, like my friend is.;(
