Why are assholes tolerated in the workforce?
I mean the true worthless asshole, the guy who is just pissed off at everyone, who thinks you're out to get him because you found all the mistakes in the procedure he wrote....why do chickenshit managers not fire these people on the spot? Anyone?

2. One possibility, he's palsy-walsy with a person(s) in high places.

Or related to them.

Another possibility, whoever is above him is real insecure and would feel threatened by anyone who was competent.

3. Because most managers don't want to manage.
They do their best to avoid confrontations and hope that problems simply go away on their own. It is endemic.

12. kwassa, Amen, Amen
I worked for managers that believed in hiding from their problems, and when problems inevitably arose, I was pushed into the fire.

4. Firing someone is one of the toughest things to do...
and most managers avoid it as much as possible. Besides, if the company is big enough, you have to build a case for firing and watch out for possible discrimination lawsuits.

But, the asshole may have some real benefit to the organization that you are not aware of. Slim possibility, but a possibility nontheless.

5. These are my theories:
1. They kiss butt

2. Managment is afraid to fire them

3. Nobody seems to notice

4. They make the company too much money

5. They have something on someone (see #2)

7. The magic phrases are "retaliation" and "hostile work environment."
Action tends to follow the use of these terms.

10. Because they threaten the bosses and the
bosses are afraid of them and afraid of the lawsuits they get threatened with. So all the non assholes have to put up with them.
