Movies everyone else hates that you liked?
Marie Antoinette- what was wrong w/ this flick? I was expecting this to stink like everyone said, but I liked it. I think people who hated this movie just didn't "get it."

Wild Wild West- great special effects, interesting & weird concepts rarely used in movies, funny dialog. I am the only person in the WORLD who likes this movie.

AI- I admit it was a little too long, but otherwise, not so bad.

(Ducking tomatoes)

What are yours?

1. As long as I'm not expecting too much I tend to enjoy a movie
even though I usually can't in good conscience call it good, I'll still enjoy it. Like the Mummy I and II, or like you said, Wild, Wild West, and even some of the sci-fi sequel/prequels that others hated I'll still manage to enjoy. Like the second and third Matrix movies. I know they aren't that good, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them anyway. :)

Although Lucas made it awful hard to enjoy his prequels. :\ Usually it takes a lot of fast-forwarding to skip over the bad parts and get to the good stuff, and a dash of denial to tell myself that they're still Star Wars, there have to be some redeeming qualities there...

2. I liked Marie Antoinette too
I LOVED the set design and costumes... it was soo over the top, like living in whipped cream with pink icing!

The only Spielberg movie I REALLY REALLY like... the one I could watch repeatedly.. is Empire of the Sun. It's the only one of his movies in which he doesn't go for the sentimental gut punch too often for my taste.

People have also said negs about The Hudsucker Proxy, but I love that one.

4. Where was the sentimental gut punch in Jaws?
Which happens to be a Spielberg movie that I can watch over and over and over, even though I walked out of it when I saw it in the theater at age 10.

18. forgot that one
I was thinking of ET and Schindler's List... that sort of thing.

I'm just not fit for this world. I don't think I've ever seen jaws all the way through. I've never seen a Rocky movie all the way through. I had no idea what BSG was when the threads popped up. my tv viewing is mostly limited to high-faluting stuff like Futurama. :)

8. Movies designed to make money repulse me...
...because movies, like other forms of art (and yes, entertainment), should be about communicating something. Of the three movies you mentioned, "WWW" was about making money. It was crass, stupid and pointless and, to my great glee, was a box-office disaster. The other two movies were genuine attempts at saying something, and I found things to admire in them despite their flaws, particularly Marie Antoinette-- I kinda agree with you that most critics didn't get it, or else were looking for a reason to trash Sophia Coppola.

"The Color Purple" was also critically panned, but I thought it was a great three-handkerchief job. I always cry when that car pulls up to the farmhouse at the end, even though I've read the book and seen the movie twice. I could have done without that church scene, though. 29. Every film review I've ever read about the 1975 original "Rollerball"
just said something akin to "Meh. Boring science-fiction movie".

I think it's a masterful film, layered like an onion with deep multiple meanings. Every time I watch the film, I catch something new I hadn't noticed before. It sure had a lot of prescient things to say about life in a society entirely dominated by ruthless, greedy corporations. Amazing film.

40. That's one of my favorites too
they did a remake a couple years ago I think. Perhaps it's unfair of me but just from the TV ads I could tell all they were after in the remake was the superficial, futuristic full contact spot aspect and not the deeper ideas the origional explores. So even though I'm sometimes a sucker for remakes - meaning they usually get my ticket money even if I end up hating it - I stayed away from that one.

I think one of the reasons that movie was so disliked was it's difference from other Comic book films: "Catwoman" was more about female empowerment, as opposed to.....whatever it is that other comic book movies are about.

If someone set out deliberately to make a really, really bad movie, they'd wind up with "Congo." It's a masterpiece of awfulness. I just love it. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Joe Don Baker. Tim Curry as a mad Romanian. African porters singing "California Dreaming." Murderous grey gorillas. A talking female brown gorilla. The curly-haired doctor from Nip/Tuck. Ernie Hudson as an African dictator. King Solomon's diamond mines. Volcanoes. Laura Linney. Death rays from space. Killer hippos. And much, much more. :)
