38. Screw them
Owned by a bunch of right wing knobs. They named a coup;e of the planes "Clipper Ayn Rand" and "Clipper Ronald Reagan". yes, really.

Oh, and the railroad division is a bunch of arrogant jerks, too. They nearly derailed (pardon the expression) passenger rail service to southern NH.

20. I flew in a Pan-Am 747 over to Germany for my first overseas posting
in the Army. Another to Saudi Arabia for the Gulf War. A third over to England from Dover, Delaware for my terminal-leave vacation before ETS-ing from the service. Lots of good Pan-Am memories...

(And yes, the flight down to the Gulf was a good memory. PM me and I'll tell you about it...)

43. I flew TTA from Houston Hobby to Ft. Polk for basic training in 1968.
That was a bummer of a flight, but it had nothing to do with the airline. The flight attendant on that TTA CV-600 did her best to elevate the mood by getting us soldier-boys somewhat liquored up.

Trans Texas Airline changed its name to Texas International later in 1968.

45. BTW: TI was the springboard from which Frank Lorenzo launched his attacks on airline labor.
Frank Lorenzo's infamous Texas Air Corporation:

Texas International
Continental Airlines
Eastern Airlines
Peoples Express
Frontier
New York Air

Lorenzo ruined a handful of good airlines and fucked-up thousands of lives of good, decent, hard-working airline employees.

6. Ozark
When I was a kid, my dad used to fly Ozark from the Quad Cities to other small airports for meetings with dealers and farmers (my dad designed farm equipment). He called it "Krazo" airlines, and would always joke about how LUCKY he felt to have made it home alive!

So, here's to Krazo Airlines! Thanks for the memories!

I remember them announcing things like, "If you are caught smoking in the restroom, you will be asked to leave the plane immediately. Thank you for listening, and may the force be with you."

44. I worked for USAirways in SFO soon after they had eaten PSA
Many of my co-workers were old PSA, and they made my job a blast! Great cool attitude, laid-back California vibe, and a mellow atmosphere.

Until the anal-retentive East Coast muckey-mucks got their paws on it.

I miss PSA, Pan Am, and Eastern Airlines.

22. Damn, talk about a trip through yesteryear?
Eastern is the first airline I've flown on.

Pan Am was second. The flight was from Orlando, FL to Washington D.C.

I flew on TWA for my posting in Greece. The takeoff from JFK was quite interesting. It was the only time I was scared of flying.

29. Speak of the devil, SKYBUS calls it quits...
Just got this as I posted about People's Express...

--------

Dear Skybus Customer:

We regret to inform you that Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective 12:00 a.m. Saturday, April 5. As a result, your Skybus flight has been cancelled.

Skybus will not be processing refunds directly. To arrange for a refund on your reservation, please contact your credit card company directly. If you purchased flight insurance for your reservation, please refer to your insurance confirmation from AIG for information on filing a claim.

Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our customers, as well as our employees and their families, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

More information will be made available on the Skybus web site (www.skybus.com).

actually I found their interisland service to be indistinguishable from Hawaiian's; both are basically Greyhound buses with wings. But without them, the Neighbor Islands become more distant from O'ahu than ever (watch for giant fare hikes next month after the heat dies down). Did I mention the agency where I work has three satellite offices out there?
