Oh my, this is too "Fargo" - you gotta read this!
It's actually too Minnesotan, but this little blurb was in our local paper today:

"More than 240 members of the Red Hat Society will dress in red hats and purple outfits to celebrate Red Hat Uffdafest featuring Those Looney Lutherans, April 12 at the Best Western in North Mankato. Five Mankato Red Hat chapters are hosting the Uffdafest for other Red Hat Chapters within 100 miles of Mankato. The event sold out weeks in advance. The event begins at 9:00 am at Best Western and included a breakfast buffet and Those Looney Lutherans comedy program."

I was just howling...it's so stereotypically Minnesota Scandihoovian *lol*

that we needed to check into the cost of renting a woodchipper

7. They're everywhere! I think the group started with a poem, or part
of it...
"When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple..." or something like that. There's even Red Hat jewelry, and sections of stores devoted to red hats, red and purple scarves, and purple clothing.

12. When I am an old woman
I shall wear purple
with a red hat that doesn't go
and doesn't suit me

(that part I know from memory. The rest requires google-fu...)

Ah: WARNING by Jenny Joseph

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Jenny Joseph

16. I always wondered if Hillary was making a statement
during that trek to the first inauguration. If you recall, they were walking for part of the route, and I noticed that she was wearing a red hat and a purple scarf.

Of course, that was back in the good old days before she became the devil.

Cream of mushroom and/or cream of celery

Who the hell starts anything at 9 AM on Saturday? That doesn't even give you enough time to set your jello.

15. They are here, too
Edited on Sun Apr-06-08 05:45 PM by TheCentepedeShoes
I see the notices on the elevator when I go to visit my mom.
Today I saw a notice in the lift from the powers in charge that "the notices in the elevator are not to be written on."
I started to whip out a pen and write "Ok, elevator notice nazi" on the notice that says the notices are not to be written on.

19. It was the Looney Lutherans and the Uffdafest that really got me...
and if you read the whole thing in the Garrison Keillor voice, as suggested above, or in the "Fargo" accent, it's just too freakin' funny!
I know all to many people here in Minnesota who really do talk just like that.

26. Ish, me either. Lutefisk is just too nasty. Thinking about it is enough
to make my stomach turn...the smell is horrid, and it doesn't have to be physically present to conjure up the odor

And I'm sitting here wondering what the connection is between the Red Hat Society and a wood chipper.
