Sense and Sensibility - BBC vs. 1995
Sadly, I didn't get to see all of the BBC version that just aired on PBS. I did see the last hour though and two things struck me.

The BBC Miss Dashwood sounded very similar to Emma Thompson's Miss Dashwood. I could have closed my eyes and thought I was hearing Thompson.

The BBC Mr. Edward Ferrars had very similar mannerisms to Hugh Grant's Mr. Edward Ferrars. It was really close, down to the eye blinking.

Oh and one more thing, I much prefer Alan Rickman.

Anyone else see it and have an opinion?

1. I so so so love Ang Lee's...
version that I had a very hard time watching the BBC version. :( I too found a great deal of similarities, in performances, staging, and even dialogue -- the latter being the most strange because the book has so very little dialogue to pull from.

There are just so many superb performances in Lee's (including Rickman making the Col. quietly sexy and hot) that I think I have been forever spoiled on any other production.

2. Re: Alan Rickman's performance...
How could it possibly be surpassed?

4. This new BBC one is really good...
...easily beating out Hugh Grant, if not Alan Rickman.

I waited all week to see the first half, knowing that having to stop in the middle would hurt. This was by far the best of the new Austens in the series, and it may be no coincidence that it was adapted by Andrew Davies.

5. I saw a commercial for it and it sounded like Emma Thompson's screenplay
I also love the Ang Lee film so much, it would be difficult to watch.

Also, I have to say I had no problem watching both the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice and the version with what's her name. What is her name. I'm having such a senior moment.
Keira Knightly.

OMG, I just had to go look that up. I never would have remembered her name in a million years. That's very scary. I used to be able to recall the names of actors and actresses with lightening speed.

7. Right, she was in the Colin Firth version
which I was comparing to the version with Keira Knightly.

8. This mini series was a little closer to the book,
but Ang Lee's version is one of my all-time favorite movies. I love the cinematography and whole look of it. I agree about the casting of similar actors - this Marianne was something of a Kate Winslet lookalike too. What this version really got wrong, IMO, is Willoughby. That actor was cute but just not Willoughby to me.

10. Dang, I LOVED Alan Rickman in that role!
After watching (bought it too) I was shocked to see some of the other movies he played in. OMG, he was the bad guy in Quigley Down Under. Rickman turned into one of my favorite actors ever.

15. When I first heard about the planned BBC series, I was worried
These Austen adaptations are okay. I've noticed a lot of casting and staging similar to versions that have come before (miniseries, movies) in many of the new BBC versions. (Yes, I've watched every single one!) However, I was SOOOOO relieved that they didn't dare mess with the Colin Firth-Jennifer Ehle version of Pride and Prejudice. That would have been sacrilege. Very smart of them just to run that again.
