When Professors go over the top in their praise:
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 03:07 PM by bicentennial_baby
This is the comment on the title page of the 2nd stage of our group project:

"Really great start...Beautifully written. I cannot wait to for the final version. Relative to the other class papers, this one is in a class by itself."

You'd think we'd just written a Shakespearean play...It's a paper on the Effects of NAFTA on Mexico's Environment.

5. I had a TA my freshman year of college who said one of my papers (for a literature class)
was "grad student level." Pretty good considering it was, as usual, something I'd thrown together in a few hours. I got a lot of B+'s and A-'s for dashed-off first drafts, even in the upper-division classes.

6. I mean, part of this was *really* good, but...
Even I can admit it wasn't *that* good. That being said, my group is all Junior/Senior Econ majors, and we're in a class of knuckleheads. Works for me. :D

32. Speaking as a TA
It's a thrill to get something at THAT stage of a project that's a reasonable approximation of the English language. ;)

I had one student last semester who I was genuinely sad not to have any more. She could spell, punctuate, and synthesize information. I used to save her papers for last so I wouldn't compare anyone else's to them. At the end of the semester I wrote a note on her last paper telling her how much I had enjoyed reading her work. Sounds like you're one of "those," which is a good thing to be.

Good on ya for being one of the good ones!

34. Thanks! I TA'd last semester, and I hear you!!
In fact, one of my students is now in my class, and I cringe at the thought of what he's producing now. :scared:

Hehe, my Prof was going over what people did poorly on, and it was exactly those things. Bad sentence structure, no concept of integrating sources and synthesizing info, etc. I knew going into it that we were golden, but it's nice to get the appreciation. My Prof is my Senior Honors Thesis adviser next year. :)

And, I was smart enough to read the syllabus online the night before classes started, so I handpicked my group the first day. No dead weight! :D

35. Wow, cool!
I got "we're sorry to have to change your group at the last second, but we know you, of everyone in the class, could handle it" yesterday.

(It was an in-class negotiation simulation, not graded, not a big deal.)

41. This thing is going to be *polished*
It's a group of 4 overachieving Econ majors

Me like getting A grades at the end of the semester. If I keep up my current intensity, I'm looking at probably 2-3 As, 1 A-. Maybe 4 As, depending on how it all plays out. I'm working harder and learning more this semester than ever before. I'm digging it. My Profs are really challenging me, and it's working! :D

44. When that happened with my ex-wife, it turned out they were having an affair.
Long time ago, but she left a paper out graded by the guy and his effusive praise was so over the top that any guy with half a brain (that's me) could see that there was more here than a prof-student relationship. Sure enough, she confirmed it when confronted.

I went to pound the shit out of him, but he wasn't in his office. I let it go with a note, and she and I staggered through two years, then divorced. Things were never the same after that. Too bad. Those were 18 years I can't get back, but that's OK. Life is like that, and it was a while ago. But your post reminded me of when anybody goes over the top like that. It's a red flag.

My daughter was born in 1976, too, by the way.

45. Er...ok. I'm not having an affair with my Prof
She's my thesis adviser and I and my group mates are in a class of idiots, so our paper is 1st class, comparatively. She's married, happily, with a new baby.

But...ok. :)
