18. Papelbon...3 pitches to retire A-Rod.
Ha, eat it! Nice whiff, mA-ron!

Beckett is the second coming of Nolan Ryan.

Papelbon is so unique, in 20 years, someone will be saying that X is the second coming of him.

Lurves my Papelbon. Whiffed two, ground out another.

Big thanks to Manny. Damn, but that boy has a bat.

20. Baseball
I've seen this sport a few times. I quite enjoyed it actually, I think due to the slow pace - I'd be surfing and looking to relax. I'm not overly passionate, though. A barrier I'm yet to overcome is that like American football, games last a while. Then again, tennis is one of my favourite sports and some matches can go for ages.

My favourite sports are football/soccer, Aussie Rules, tennis and cricket.

My favourite American sport is basketball, that's pretty cool. Then baseball, then hockey. I can't get into American football at all, I simply don't understand it. I see it, ponder what the seventh down is, then change the channel. :D

:P

How are you today? :)

I never used to be a big baseball fan, but now that I live int he Boston area, instead of the wilds of western MA, it's almost like the law to be a Sox fan.

I love soccer. New England has a great team too! The Revolution: http://www.revolutionsoccer.net/

:hi: I hope that you are well today.

lol

I support the Australian national team. It's a very exciting time for we in this country who enjoy this sport, what with the recent launch of a new domestic league - the network which owned the rights to the old NSL either neglected it completely or screened it at obscure hours; the clubs set up had a distinct ethnic background - for example, the Melbourne Knights were formed by Croats and when this club would meet another which had a Serb background, well, there was much crowd trouble; attendances were shit in general, so on. But now, the A-League... geez. Clubs represent the major cities of each state - Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland, Adelaide, so on. So there's no crowd trouble between Croats and Serbs for instance. Crowd figures are substantially on the improve, and television coverage... all games are televised. The standard of play is poor to be honest, but it's difficult when all the best players are lured to European clubs. Still, there's so much to be happy about.

Transitioning from Oceania to Asia is another significant step, on multiple facets. With regard to international football, we play more matches, more significant matches. In Oceania, there was no interest in playing Fiji to win 14-0. The scorelines were ridiculous, especially the 31-0 against America Samoa. Asian football is weak compared to the other continents, still it's a vast step up. As for the clubs, for the first time, Australian clubs are involved in the Asian Champions League. Again the standard isn't great , still it's exciting as it's all new to us. Some of the fan culture is amazing, especially on the part of Urawa Reds. They played out a 2-2 draw against Sydney and at one point trailed 2-0. And yet their travelling support were making an absolute racket. Also the timing of their choreography - they'd move as one... geez.

Probably what kick-started this revival of the fortunes of the sport in this country was qualifying for the World Cup, which was an amazing experience for us. I feel the situation in Australia and the United States similar in some respects - both domestic leagues are relatively new, international success not so long ago, American clubs have participated in competitions held in the Americas... and American players have some presence in Europe.

28. Fascinating...
Thanks for that. I used to play soccer in elementary school. Still love to watch it, even though I have issues with any sport that ends in a tie. :P

Our niece is a phenomenal player...I definitely see her going to the Olympics someday. She's awesome. :D

29. Women's football
Edited on Sat Apr-12-08 09:02 PM by bixente
is improving a lot, it seems. I'm not surprised you say that (about your niece) as I'm aware America is one of the strongest nations in this particular field. We're improving as well, I seen a few of Australia's matches at the women's World Cup - we made it to the quarter-finals, the furthest we've travelled. Of course America is stronger than us. hehe

About the improvement. Brazil's Marta... she's the best in the world and the amazing thing you can say is that she's simply talented. No, you don't say "she's talented by the standards of the women's game". She's simply talented, fuck gender.

I haven't played a proper match, I don't think. For some time I took to slowly kicking the ball about the backyard, lost in my thoughts. Also I'd practice one-touch passing with my brother.

Sorry, I've thrown your thread off-topic.

American "football" is fun as background noise. I love my Pats, but I wouldn't glue myself to the tele to watch.

I should of answered your question directly, like this. Well, as I said, I support the Australian national team.

I was actually disappointed for the Pats. They deserved it as the best team.
