Am I the only one who thinks German sounds cool?
Especially the Viennese dialect. But really, it's all good.

I wish I could speak it. I have some connection to the country, my ancestry.

1. I'm sorry
I hope this thread isn't insensitive for some people. I think my feelings stem from my enjoyment of the Austrian crime drama Kommissar Rex.

Probably this is unnecessary, but I stress easily when I perceive that I may of offended anyone. Generalized anxiety disorder. Probably this is unnecessary for all but me, but if I don't do this, the dreaded "what ifs" will chew away at my mind.

2. I did an experiment a while back.
I took a song that I'd written that had really crappy lyrics and translated it into german to see if it sounded cooler.

It did. :P

The Royal Frog Trampling Institute, 16 Rayners Lane, London, W.C. Fields.

I'll just repeat that...

Tristram and Isolde Phillips, 7.30 Covent Garden Saturday (near Sunday) and afterwards at the Inigo Jones Fish Emporium.

Back when I was a student, I tried to read Karl Marx in translation and was so bored by it that I started reading it aloud in what I thought was an BBC accent.

I enjoyed Engels enough NOT to have to read aloud.

58. Selige Sehnsucht
Sag es niemand, nur den Weisen,
Weil die Menge gleich verhöhnet:
Das Lebendge will ich preisen,
Das nach Flammentod sich sehnet.

In der Liebesnächte Kühlung,
Die dich zeugte, wo du zeugtest,
Überfällt dich fremde Fühlung,
Wenn die stille Kerze leuchtet.

Nicht mehr bleibest du umfangen
In der Finsternis Beschattung,
Und dich reißet neu Verlangen
Auf zu höherer Begattung.

Keine Ferne macht dich schwierig,
Kommst geflogen und gebannt,
Und zuletzt, des Lichts begierig,
Bist du Schmetterling verbrannt.

Und so lang du das nicht hast,
Dieses: Stirb und Werde!
Bist du nur ein trüber Gast
Auf der dunklen Erde.

5. I've always liked the sound of Germanic languages
I'm a buff for WWII movies, and many of my favorites are those in which the Germans speak German, like "Patton" and "The Longest Day." There seems to be a kind of precision and cadence to it, and I like that.

Btw, I've been remiss in welcoming you to DU, so... welcome to DU. :hi:

But I'd like to give mention to Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others). If anyone isn't familiar with it, it's an outstanding film which was set in the time when Germany was split in two with the Stasi maintaining a tight strangle on the East. Very political but also a superb human drama.

Sadly, one of the lead actors, Ulrich Mühe, passed away some years after from stomach cancer. He was brilliant as Stasi Chief Wiesler.

I'd give my highest recommendation.

Thanks for the welcome, although I registered here three years ago. :D Only recently have I began posting regularly, though. I've evolved from lurkerdom.

50. I haven't
Thanks for sharing, very much.

About the ancestry, I stumbled upon this information some time ago:

Johann HEINRICH NIEMANN1035 was born on 27 Jun 1799 at GERMANY - Bremen. He was baptized on 30 Jun 1799 in GERMANY - Bremen - St Peter's Cathedral. He immigrated on 28 Oct 1846 to Adelaide SA - on the 'Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel'.1027,1070,1071 He was naturalized on 30 Dec 1848 in South Australia <1862ER>. ' ... and the name Niemann is included with the nine other successful pioneer reefers in Bendigo during the quartz era in the 1860's, ; F Cussack's book 'Bendigo a History'' Occupation - Cabinet maker, mine owner, boarding house keeper.1072 He died on 22 Jun 1886 at Eaglehawk Vic. He was buried on 24 Jun 1886 at Eaglehawk Vic. Grave : Grave Mon A2 Grave 242 1073 Parents: Franz Wilhelm NIEMANN and Anna Rebecca KARNS (NIEMANN).

Spouse: Tobete Margrete OSTERMANN (NIEMANN). Johann HEINRICH NIEMANN and Tobete Margrete OSTERMANN (NIEMANN) were married on 22 Jan 1833 in GERMANY - Bremen - Groplingen 'in the home of the Bride's parents1076 They lived at California Gully, in a brick house with tent next door in Bendigo Vic about 1854. Family Arrival in Australia
http://members.ozemail.com.au/~leadbeater/passengerlists/

Johann Diedrich Conrad NIEMANN1035,1066 was born on 3 Oct 1838 at GERMANY - Bremen.1066 He immigrated in Oct 1846. Arrived in Adelaide with his parents and family on the 'Heerjeebhoy Rustomjee Patel' Occupation - Miner. He died on 23 Mar 1883 at Eaglehawk Vic - Tuburcular Asthma. He was buried on 26 Apr 1883 at Eaglehawk Vic. His remains are in an unmarked grave at Eaglehawk Cemetery. It is unfortunate that no headstone or recognition of his burial place remains.
Bendigo Cemetery Trust claims burial 26/4/1883 but I have death 23/3/1883 ! Grave : A2 /242 same grave as his Father 1069 There is little information regarding Johann Diedrich Conrad apart from facts related to his birth, marriage etc. He died at a relatively young age and the family left Bendigo for Broken Hill following his death. The Niemann book has a few more details but little of an anecdotal nature which gives few clues regarding his personality. Parents: Johann HEINRICH NIEMANN and Tobete Margrete OSTERMANN (NIEMANN).

Ack. Perhaps a little too much? :D

65. 120 years later and STILL some of the funniest shit EVAH!
Especially for bi-lingual native Englisch speakers. The first time I read it my sides were sore the next day. It's about 15 pages and took FOREVER to read, mostly because the tears of laughter blurred the text.

"I went often to look at the collection of curiosities in Heidelberg Castle, and one day I surprised the keeper of it with my German. I spoke entirely in that language. He was greatly interested; and after I had talked a while he said my German was very rare, possibly a "unique"; and wanted to add it to his museum.

If he had known what it had cost me to acquire my art, he would also have known that it would break any collector to buy it. :spray: Harris and I had been hard at work on our German during several weeks at that time, and although we had made good progress, it had been accomplished under great difficulty and annoyance, for three of our teachers had died in the mean time.:spray: A person who has not studied German can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is." (The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth)

48. My grandparents were German immigrants.
I loved listening to them talk when they thought nobody else was around. :)

My other set of grandparents were Polish immigrants - they spoke perfect English, except when they were angry. All of a sudden, lots of yelling in Polish ensued. That was kinda cool too.

Did you ever overhear a Russian conversation? As goofy as it sounds, I gotta say that if I could describe the language in one word, it would have to be "powerful".

But you're absolutely right - the German language sounds really cool. :)

59. I like the way it sounds
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 12:33 AM by Rob H.
but then again, my dad's family emigrated from Germany pre-U.S. Civil War, so there's a family connection. My dad's father and grandfather even spoke German fluently because they'd decided to keep the language going in the family. The only reason my dad never learned is because his father died of leukemia when my dad was 3.

I've been listening to a lot of German metal lately (specifically Eisbrecher's Antikörper) and it sounds even more aggressive for being sung in German.

63. It's very lovely when you're singing......
especially Brahms Requiem and Beethoven's glorious Ninth.......

It can have a lot of humor as in Haydn's Creation and a lot of Bach ...... and it can be exquisitely scathing as in Brecht

My great-grandparents were immigrants from Germany therefore I studied German for a year in college. Depends on whom is speaking it, I suppose.

75. Some German is very soft and pretty.
I've never found it to be the offensive language portrayed by anti-German films.
