80s flashback: Asia and Whitesnake to release new albums on April 15th

"Asia’s eponymously titled debut album in 1982 was both ecstatically received and the biggest selling album of the year. It spawned a trio of US top 10 singles in "Heat of the Moment", "Only Time Will Tell" and "Sole Survivor." Over the greater part of the 80s, Asia racked up 15 million in global record sales.

Rising from the ashes in 2008, the Multi-Platinum Supergroup Asia returns with "Phoenix," the first new album featuring the original line up in 25 years. With a revered musical pedigree, Geoff Downes (Yes, The Buggles), Steve Howe (Yes), Carl Palmer (ELP), and John Wetton (King Crimson) have returned to their hit making roots. Featuring the anthemic lead track "Never Again", and the poignant "An Extraordinary Life," Asia’s revived the sound that made them radio staples."

"The premier household name in melodic hard rock returns with a vengeance! Whitesnake is back with "Good To Be Bad", their 10th studio album and first in over a decade. This brand new album features a slew of instant-classic Whitesnake songs that are destined to stand side by side with such favorites as "Here I Go Again", "Still Of The Night" and "Fool For Your Love." Led by world-renown vocalist extraordinaire David Coverdale, "Good To Be Bad" is truly classic Whitensake, displaying that rare combination of high class and kick ass that has made them what they are today... the absolute best!

The initial pressing of Good To Be Bad comes packaged in a lavish O card and contains a bonus CD with seven live tracks and the video for Ready To Rock ."

1. You mean they're two different bands?

2. Ah, but "Whitesnake" has only one "classic" member in it, David Coverdale.
Asia has all four original members. Of course, Whitesnake has had about as many lineup changes as the band it grew out of, Deep Purple.

I saw Asia at the beginning of the reunion tour, long before a new album was even discussed. They were spectacular. John Wetton doesn't sound any different. (Insert joke about how that's a bad thing here.)

4. As a Crimson fan...
...I tend to take my John Wetton wherever I can get it, but Asia? Maybe not so much.

It's pretty amusing that there is a battle between the John Payne edition of the band and the "originals"...very similar to what happned with Yes in the Trevor Rabin years and the "Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe" camp, resolving in the "Union" album, in which both teams contributed but there was no actual collaboration.

5. True, but ABWH wasn't trying to call itself "Yes"...
...while John Payne is trying to call his band "Asia".

8. Agreed...but either way, at some point the audience wins, or it loses...
...GPS..."Guthrie Govan," as "G" (guitars), "John Payne," as "P" (bass, vocals) and "Jay Schillen," as "S" (drums), plus guest keyboardist Ryo Okumoto from Spock's Beard, wasn't half bad. Govan and Payne played on "Silent Nation," the final Payne-fronted Asia album (along with ex-AC/DC drummer Chris Slade).

GPS sank without a trace.

So Payne decided to bill himself as Asia, which would have been OK if the original members hadn't reunited.

So yeah, I agree with you 100%, Yes handles the situation MUCH better than Asia (or, specifically, John Payne).

6. So the Apocolypse is coming?
I saw Asia back in the day. how could that many good musicians make such lousy music. Most boring show ever.

And Whitesnake. I saw them once and spent the night counting how many times Caverdale grabbed, mentioned or alluded to his crotch. I lost count at around 100. that was the Steve Vai version and I fet so bad for him having to play that schlock....
