*The Sensuous Orange*

[CaliforniaPeggy]

The orange is heavy in my hand; I want it in my mouth

Its skin is tough and dry, but I know that something wet and sweet lies within

The colors are blotchy and uneven, but who cares?

They are superficial

I need to reach the fruit inside

But my fingers sting as they tug at the peel


My paring knife can cut where I cannot

The skin yields to the knife; the small pieces fall away

I am careful not to cut the fruit itself

I must not waste any of its sweetness

The fragrance meets my nostrils; even now, long after eating, I remember

the flowers living in that scent


Now the peel is gone, removed

I am ready to eat this orange, to make it part of me


I pull at it but it refuses to open

The sections cling to one another in raspy groups

But I am determined

I pull it into two unequal parts

And attack the first while the second waits passively for me

I will consume it in my own good time

How deceptive it looks

Dry to the touch...

The fragrant, sweet juice hits my mouth like a surprised kiss

Now I bite deeply, and strongly

All my senses are alive with this orange

The juice gets under my thumbnail and I feel the sting

I’d forgotten in the rush to eat

Now I lick my thumb and the sting recedes


How much you are like this orange, my love

With your dry, tough skin

And the sweet wetness inside

When I take you in my mouth

How wonderful your flavor is

I want to taste you forever

You will explode in my mouth

And flood me with your life

I will drink deeply of you then


You excite all my senses

With your kiss, your touch, your scent

I want to peel you apart

So I can really get inside

And know all your unknowable secrets


But you resist me

I cannot peel you

The way I peel my orange

I cannot cut your skin away

You must be consumed

You must become part of me

As I am part of you

I will consume you

In my own good time

Only then

Will I truly know
