Despite Toby Keith's past public support of President George W. Bush and his famous post-Sept.11 song, "The Angry American (Courtesy of the Red White and Blue)," this year the country star says things have changed.

Keith, who in the past has said he's a Democrat but was unhappy with the party's candidates, now can support the current contenders for the nomination.

"I'm real happy that there are two candidates that people can get behind," he told PEOPLE at the CMT awards Monday. "I feel like there are two people now – with Hillary and the time she's spent," he said of the former first lady and current New York senator.

Of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, he said, "Obama looks like a great speaker and a great leader. And I think you can learn on your feet in there, so I don't hold people responsible for not having a whole bunch of political background in the House and Senate."

1. Gosh, that's so wonderful - America's Most Ignorant person is on our side.
I can't imagine it has anything to do with publicity or seeing which way the wind blows. Nosirree.

12. He is not, Rabrrrrr. Cut him some slack.
I don't know if you're a country music fan (I suspect not), but cut TK some slack. Yeah, there was the Dixie Chicks thing, but actually (and yes I love the Chicks) they can be a little annoying at times.

TK's just makin' a living. People got a little crazy a few years back. I like TK and I actually enjoy his music (most of it, anyway). Diff strokes.

3. I'm so relieved. Right.
A country singer with a past of right wing pandering, support of BUSH, and a MULLET in the year 2008 feels he can support a Democrat.

The clouds have parted, and the sky is blue.
:sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm:

13. If you're judging from that album cover, that'sn NOT 2008.
I don't think he has the mullet now.

4. I. Don't. Care.
He's still, essentially, a right-winger. DINO, much?

And his music sucks.

5. Hey, it's a sign that being a right-wing asshat...
isn't as marketable as it used to be, even among the Skoal-Long-Cut set.

8. He said some nice things about Obama without slipping up and calling him "boy".
But I smell a spoiler for Senator Clinton. Get any repukers left in the primary process to throw in for Hillary. He's all talk as far as I'm concerned. Or maybe he's trying to earn his way out of the hell he's destined for for "kick their ass 'n' take their gas."

Go kill and eat a defenseless animal, Keith, and wash it down with stolen crude.

19. The guy who wrote this verse?
Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way.

I don't care who you support, if one of your biggest songs is about patriotic national aggression in retaliation for attacks that were spurred by other acts of national aggression and the like, I don't have much time for you.

22. While a bunch of kids, many of whom...

...probably only joined the services so they'd be able to afford college, were sent off to die overseas in an unnecessary war.

The blood stains make the money that much more tempting, apparently.

"Fucker" is right (and possibly even an understatement).

24. Honestly, these comments are kind of a pleasant surprise to me
I remember back around the time of "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" and his feud with the Dixie Chicks when Toby Keith had claimed to be a "conservative Democrat." I had always assumed the "conservative" part was the operative word; the only proof of him being a Democrat that I'd ever seen was that he campaigned for the conservative Dem Brad Carson in OK. However, I'm actually surprised and think it's kind of cool that he's praising Clinton and Obama. I had assumed he was a "Democrats for McCain" type. Yeah, maybe it's partly "finger in the wind" stuff, but I haven't really seen proof that this election is going to be some kind of Democratic blowout, or that supporting Democrats would somehow be helpful for Keith in appealing to his listening "base."
