any home remedies for soothing a very sore throat?
i am not looking for medical advice. i went to the doc yesterday, he told me i have tonsillitis and i'm taking some antibiotics for it. however, my throat is absolute agony. i've been alternating advil and tylenol for the pain and gargling warm salt water, but it still hurts a lot.

does anyone have any suggestions that might help?

tia :hi:

1. Honey and vinegar
Some honey mixed with some apple cider vinegar to make it runny but still a little thick. The honey helps coat the throat and the vinegar soothes the rawness.

At least that's what my grandma used to tell me. Hope you feel better soon.

2. I would go with honey and lemon in herbal tea - mint is best.
with a shot of brandy or rum if you are feeling bold.

5. If all else fails...
try a warm salted water gargle. The taste is nasty but it does help.

6. My uncle would gargle with vinegar and black pepper.
I wouldn't recommend a lot of things my uncle did.

19. Funny, Vinegar and black pepper
I use lemon juice and cayenne. The same basic idea, but the lemon is much more palatable.

Favorite tea plus extra lemon juice and cayenne pepper is one cold destroyer.

Pesto with fresh basil and strong garlic is another.

7. There are some over-the-counter anesthetic lozenges
They taste nasty, but they're better than having a sore throat.

(Are you old enough to remember "Count Sore Throat Pain"?)

8. The Halls "max strength" honey and lemon ones are really, really good.
So are the Sucrets (but you have to check the label to make sure you're getting one with anesthetic).

10. Chloraseptic spray

It's got anaesthetic in it. Just spray into the back of your throat, let it sit there for about 10 seconds, then swallow. Instant relief.

I had a strep throat once, incredibly painful to swallow, and this stuff was a miracle.

11. Fresh ginger works.
Most grocery stores sell fresh ginger root. Slice a small bit off and place under tongue. Voila! Instant relief.
Repeat as needed.

18. I was skeptical
when I first heard about it myself. Nothing I'd tried was as effective and I've since heard it's a common folk remedy.

20. Brandy and a hat
You take a bottle of brandy and a hat and crawl into bed. You place the hat at the foot of the bed and start drinking the brandy. When you see two hats, you may not be cured but you won't care. Works for many other ailments too.

Sleep it off.

... at least that's what I'm gonna try if mine doesn't get any better. :P

Actually mine seems to have transformed from sore throat and cough into sinus head cold. Damn disease can't make up its mind what it's gonna do to me.

I'm sure I'll wake up tomorrow with something completely unexpected, like chicken pox spots or something.

29. this really does work
sage tea.

cup hot water
teaspoon ground sage
some honey and/or mint to lighten the taste
let cool to bearable temp and gargle every 15 minutes
really does work, been using it for years with family and myself.
the Chloroseptic at bedtime works too, but I prefer the tea during day.

should notice results in about 6 hours.

sage tea is great for any mouth/throat tenderness.

Hope you get better real soon...:)

26. Another vote for ginger tea.
I get a good chunk of ginger. Peel & cut. Simmer in a pot of water. Add the juice of one lemon. Put through a strainer into cup. Add honey to taste. Hope you feel better soon.

27. This is all about imflammation.
Omega-3's as a base of general soothing. I find that the healthfood store cough and throat syrups are really good. Most contain Elderberries, and are really exceptional. Honey and lemon are always great. Ginger tea is also good.

30. So much wine you pass out?
Okay, seriously.

Gargling with salt water (but you've tried that)

tea with honey and lemon

hot toddy (bourbon, hot water, lemon and sugar)

chloraseptic spray every five seconds

Honestly, I'd probably take a night-time cold remedy to try to sleep through it. I'm a total baby when it comes to sore throats.
