Holy Hercules, Batman! A C-130 landing on an aircraft carrier?
:wow:

And even more surprising, taking off again?

I bet it was empty, but still...

2. They must have had a hell of a headwind
A carrier can make 30 knots or so, which helps. Add in a 20-knot headwind, and that's a 50-knot head start. I didn't see any JATO packs on them.

Ballsy.

3. How much air strip distance does a c-130 need to take off?
I know nothing about aviation but it would seem that a big motha like that would take an awfully long time to rev up enough to get airborne.

However, what do I know...

4. That's the question...
It was designed to operate from short, improvised airfields, it's got over 13,000 horsepower, and the straight-wing design makes it great for low speeds. And a carrier could give it a head stare of at least 30 knots, and probabably as many as 50.

Still, taking off in less than 900 feet?

They have in their codpieces what Dubya could only dream of.

6. Darn, beat me to it.
The jet-assisted takeoff of a C-130 is an amazing thing to watch (my dad used to fly those and C-141s).

12. Are those the ones with the solid rocket boosters strapped to the fuselage?
I'v seen that done on the Blue Angels C-130, probably the coolest thing I'v witnessed at an airshow!

9.  U.S.S. Forrestal
Wasn't that the ship McCain's jet plane blew up? I know he wasn't responsible, but it's still an fascinating story that showcases his illustrious military carrier of being in the wrong place at the right time.
