2. I saw "The Grass Roots" in 1986 at Marriot's Great America...
...I put "The Grass Roots" in quotes because it was lead singer Rob Grill and the same guys who were backing up The Monkees (minus Mike Nesmith), who were the headliners and touring behind the "Then And Now...The Best Of The Monkees" album and the single "That Was Then, This Is Now."

The tour also included "Herman's Hermits"...once again, no Peter Noone and only guitarist "Lek" Leckenby from the original band, and "Gary Puckett and the Union Gap"...that's right, boys and girls...Gary Puckett fronting the Monkees' backup band.

Grill looked better than any other musician on the stage that day. He had one of these white cotton beachcomber outfits on and was tanned as a mo-fo. Unfortunately, he pretty much phoned in his performance. The only song where he really dug in and drive the audience crazy was "Let's Live For Today," and the only time where he genuinely seemed to enjoy himself. He did all the expected hits but would stop singing intermittently whenever the audience was singing along.

Other highlights of the show were Peter Tork hitting all the notes in the guitar solo to "Valleri" (played by Glen Campbell on the original).

The Herman's Hermits part was the weakest...whoever the singer was tried to sing like Noone, but when he'd get to "I'm 'enery the eighth I am," it was groaner time.
