Trajectory

We started on Cambridge and finished on Humboldt,
the promise and complete trajectory of a life together
freeze dried and squeezed into a several months
and just a couple of square miles of Milwaukee.
Each coming together implied an inevitable ending,
And finally that last night, we pretended it was just
Another normal Saturday, two lovers on the east side
Shooting pool in The Landmark, the jukebox already
nostalgic for us by the time you sank the eight-ball
into the corner pocket and said “best-two-out-of-three?”
And later that night, walking through sand variegated
snow drifts on Bradford Beach, discussing the merits
of ice cream in January and the horror of driftwood
as a home decorating theme, Lake Michigan swelling
under ice floes and settling back again, deep watery
breaths constantly attracting and repelling the shoreline,
I took your hand and stopped, nearly honest, almost
able to release the bow and let the words hit home.
