Damn, food is getting expensive...
We just got back. Played the "who can come the closest without going over" game. I won. He said $137, I said $170. It was $163. :o

We better eat all of this crap. With the exception of the Brita filter, of course. ;)

1. My husband and I discussed this yesterday. Some things legitimately are
increased because of the transportation costs, etc. Other things are raised because they don't think the customer will notice since so much else has increased. Deliberate gouging of the customer by the retailers.

6. All of which have significant transportation costs all along
the way from the farmer to the retailer. It's horrid. Milk at the supermarket we shop at the most has gone up 30 cents a gallon.

9. There was a sign next to the eggs describing the "dramatic rise in price"
It's insane. I really wish i lived in a garden suitable location right now. Sigh.

11. Doesn't this make sense economically speaking though?
Eggs, milk, grain, bread. These commodities are sold on a very competitive basis (who really cares about a certain brand of eggs, grain, or milk very much) This should mean that they sell at not very much above cost. Thus an increase in the production and transportation cost is going to immediately smack the consumer, because there isn't as much give in the profit margin as there is with something like Chanel No.5 which has a profit margin that can easily absorb higher gas costs.

it's not just transportation and production costs though, I think. The sign about the eggs discussed an increase in demand for egg whites used in the production of other goods. Not sure what other goods they were referring to. I've known about the grain issue for a few months now, bakers are a bit panicky about the coming year. Rye flour will essentially be unavailable by July. Yikes!

On edit, by "screwed up", I meant that it's going to hit the people who can least absorb the hit harder than those of us who can. :)

5. No we were just guessing when we got to the checkout.
Sniffa paid, although I offered. :)

And we don't use a list. We just start at the produce dept. and work our way down. We generally buy the same things every time. Although I did stock up on more kosher coca-cola and splurged on some mini-eclairs. ;)

3. I worry about families with children ...
there's just two of us here and it is expensive enough. I don't buy convenience foods for the most part and I cook a lot of food at a time, freezing leftovers.
I can't imagine having to feed and clothe 2 or 3 children. :(

13. How long will that last you guys?
I spent $1500 on food last week. :wow:

$1000 of it was stuff I needed from Costco. I usually go once a month to the tune of $300 or so, but haven't been since the first of the year.

Then, on top of the Costco trip, I needed produce, etc.,

And, BoyMidlo ate the entire box of Fruit by the Foot in one day. :eyes:

2 jars of pasta sauce
1 jar pizza sauce
1 jar of green olives
1 jar black peppercorns
1/2 gallon of milk
Dozen eggs
Bagels
Cream Cheese
Bread
Sub rolls
Brita filter
Grater (for my vegan cheese, w00t!)
3 bottles of kosher Coca Cola
1 pork roast
1 lb ground hamburger
1/4 lb Kalamata olives
1 six pack Sam Adams

i think that was all...oh, and the mini eclairs. :9

$1500?! Christ! :wow:

We normally get our produce and cold cuts at a different place, much cheaper, and our meat at the local butcher shop. I'm swamped with work today, so we went with one stop big grocery store shopping. It probably would have been a bit cheaper had we gone to all three.

D'oh! I forgot the gravy, stuffing mix, yogurt, and lavash wrap thingies. :P

16. Well, I always buy my canned tomatoes, dried pasta, etc at Costco.
Because it is so much cheaper and we were out of frickin' everything.

Of course, now that the larder is well stocked, BoyMidlo is having a field day. Ate the entire case of black olives I brought him frickin' yesterday.

and we go through 2 gallons of milk a day. "sigh"
