I've decided I'm gonna stop getting cable tv
because they just raised the price again and there's really so little worth watching, to me. one son will not like this b/c of sports, but he can go to his dad's house or go to campus and watch games on a big screen. other than that, I don't see any reason to keep it.

I can watch just about anything online if I can have a little patience. I don't watch tv news for information anymore. I don't watch movies when they come on tv cause I hate the commercials. I have all the simpsons dvds that have been issued...

why should I pay more than 50 bucks to get shopping network, channel after channel of stupid religious programming and girls gone wild commercials after 11pm?

plus, I have to cut my expenses. I have to have internet access for work and don't have cable modem. If I could do w/o a land line I would, but have to have one or the other for dsl.

I'm trying to think of all the other non-essentials I can cut - or the non-essentials that I would choose to cut first. what about you?

1. I've never paid for cable TV in my entire life.
Only times I've had it was when it came free with the apartment.

2. I've been very tempted for months to drop my cable
ALmost $120 a month, and I think that money could be put to better use. Like, just buying the DVDs of the few shows that I actually watch.

6. mine's half that amt.
but I found watchtvsitcoms and the shows that I wanted to watch are there... I couldn't watch them anyway b/c I didn't have premium channels. but you can go there and see all of The Sopranos and Weeds (the only two I've bothered to see) plus all of Arrested Development.

I watched a couple of movies last night (sort of) while messing with a migraine that I would never have gone to see in the theater or rented... The Other Boleyn Girl and Nanny Diaries. When you have a migraine, you definitely don't wanna watch No Country For Old Men. :) - or at least I wouldn't.

8. 120? Holy shit.
There's ways to watch just about every major show for free. Dropping cable just silences the contant stream of yap from the cable news shows.

9. plus, if you rent from iTunes
you never have to pay a late fee. you have a month to watch a rented movie, or 24 hours once you start it. For 3.99. They don't have a lot of stuff, but I did see No Country For Old Men from them.

I keep asking them to get Mystery Train and Down By Law b/c Jarmusch's stuff is so expensive on Criterion. Really, it's not like they're carrying huge amts of inventory in a warehouse to stock things that aren't the top sellers.

Plus, you can rent dvds from the library for free. And cds. And you can go outside and not do anything that has to do with rectangular/square entertainment.

3. I haven't had cable for four years
and I've rarely missed it. My outdoor antenna pulls in 21 or 22 channels, some of them even in English (:)), and PBS keeps my viewing habits fairly content.

4. I cut back to basic-basic
which gives me the networks, including PBS, CSPAN, and a couple of others for $12 a month.

Unfortunately, using rabbit ears gives me nothing but snow, thanks to the surrounding trees and buildings.

I miss the Weather Channel and Turner Classic Movies, but that's about it.

5. I'm always tempted to drop it
I really wish they had a la carte cable- just pay for the 5 channels you want and not the other 70 that I wouldn't even watch if I was bedridden.

7. I dropped the cable tv
but have cable for the computer. I have rabbit ears and the local channels. I don't miss it. I watch Olberman at my mom's house once a week and it's a treat. I watch 'Reaper' on the CW, which is my current favorite. I also like 'My name is Earl'. I like the off beat stuff. One thing I hate is, Kathy Lee, is back on. I still can't stand her. She is a smart-ass snark to, Hoda. What do people see in her?

10. I'm the PIG here. I have Dish Network and all the premium channels.
It runs about 135 per month but it saves me from having to pay for films...in the sense of....
I used to have just basic TV (satellite) but spent 35-60 dollars per month on DVDs

11. I am tempted to do the same
I would have done it by now were it not for Turner Classic Movies - I wish I could just pay for that channel alone and to hell with all that other garbage

12. Haven't had it for 11 years.
Wasn't available out here for a while and when it was we opted for DSL instead. Don't really watch TV anyway, except for a little PBS. :hi:

13. Trying to watch a movie on cable/satellite is almost impossible
In the mornings when getting ready for work, there is nothing on worth watching.
In the evenings, the commercials are so loud, frequent and obnoxious, I end up turning the TV off. I don't even bother to watch the rest of the movie.
The news is biased, so I get my news on the net.
I also get the weather on the net, WHEN I want to get the weather and not listen through alot of drivel.

I dropped my cell phone years ago. If people want me, they can call me at home and leave a message.
