27. Ah, okay
I thought you meant "lose weight," which would be riDICulous in your case.

Belly dancing itself would be good cardio, no? And you could do soup-can curls at your computer. :)

30. Check the recreation department
They often offer those classes, usually cheaper than at a community college.

24. I used to do bellydancing...
It actually gives you coordination and rhythm, and it's very good exercise for your abs. Before I took lessons, I was the type of person who was always bumping into things and tripping over my own two feet, but after a few months of lessons, I was a lot more graceful. In bellydancing, you focus on moving one muscle at a time, and as a result, you eventually become much more aware of the physical space your body inhabits. I highly recommend it! :)

Alas, when I moved, I was unable to find lessons close by, so I haven't bellydanced in quite awhile.

26. Excellent.
I had a DVD that was half-assed belly dancing (it was mostly an exercise thing and didn't really teach it to you) but I want to really learn it. I think there are classes somewhere at the Comm. College here. I must look into that.

29. That's the route I went...
Took classes through a local community college. It was great fun - met a lot of nice people. There was a real sense of fellowship among the women in the class, which was composed of all ages and sizes - bellydancing isn't only for the thin and beautiful. It's a very empowering dance that celebrates femininity. Hopefully someday I'll have the opportunity to get back into it. :)

33. Here's a dancer local to Houston
Sahira has these short instructional videos available. She's really good, but I haven't seen her in person yet.

I have another link at home for an Israeli dancer that has some short instructional videos online, too. I don't recall her name or I'd search for it and post.

Here are some music links you might like, too:

Radio Bastet - Vintage Belly Dance Music
Passionate Music

Hope that helps :)

36. I am a bellydancer....
and have been for many years! I love it...the friendships, the performances, the costumes, the fun!!!

You can find teachers lists at numerous websites: www.shira.net and www.zaghareet.com.. ..also google bellydance for your local area, as some areas (Florida, North Texas, San Diego, Albuquerque, and others I'm not aware of) have local entities that list of all of the local area instructors and upcoming seminars and performances.

I'll be glad to answer any questions, or help in any way...just let me know!
