This morning I have the music of "Music Man"
going through my head (Marion the Librarian) since the family sat down and watched it last night
(the version with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones).

This morning I go to thinking.

Do you suppose such a play/musical is possible in this day and age.

When it was produced in 1957 it was extremely popular on Broadway.

The film version was also quite popular when it was released in 1962 (one of the top grosses of the year).

Still I can not imagine that this kind of show would find and audience in this day and age, and that makes my 53 year old bones sad.

What does any one else think??:loveya:

1. My parents watch it every Fourth of July
So I did by proxy as well. Like it or not, it's a part of the family tradition, so I actually know all the songs.

2. I don't think a musical like "The Music Man" would be possible today.
The movie musical has made a resurgance in the past few years...in thanks due to the success of "Chicago". But movie musicals...as wholesome as, say, "The Music Man" wouldn't be made today.

3. I agree with you
and to me that is a shame.

We have lost something as a nation when we can no longer generate entertainment such as Progy and Bess, Music Man, Sound of Music et al.

What a shame.

4. I liked it too, still do.

No, I can't see a show like that being produced nowadays.

5. In 1962 at the age of 10, I fell madly in love with Shirely Jones.

Lida Rose, I'm home again, Rose
To get the sun back in the sky.
Lida Rose, I'm home again, Rose
About a thousand kisses shy.
Ding dong ding
I can hear the chapel bell chime.
Ding dong ding
At the least suggestion I'll pop the question.
Lida Rose, I'm home again, Rose
Without a sweetheart to my name.
Lida Rose, now everyone knows
That I am hoping you're the same
So here is my love song, not fancy or fine
Lida Rose, oh won't you be mine
Lida Rose, oh Lida Rose oh Lida Rose.

9. Seventy six trombones
Seventy six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close at hand
They were followed by rows and rows of the finest virtuosos;
the cream of every famous band.
Loved this song:

Seventy six trombones caught the morning sun
With a hundred and ten cornets right behind
There were more than a thousand reeds springing up like weeds,
There were horns of every shape and kind

There were copper bottom tympani in horse platoons
Thundering, thundering, all along the way
Double bell euphoniums and big bassoons
Each bassoon having his big fat say

There were fifty mounted cannon in the battery
Thundering, thundering, louder than before
Clarinets of every size and trumpeters who'd improvise
A full octave higher than the score

Seventy six trombones hit the counter point
While a hundred and ten cornets played the air
To the rhythm of 'Harch Harch Harch!'
All the kids began to march
And they're marching still, right today
