I hate chemistry.
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 09:34 PM by AspieGrrl
I don't know why I even took it - it's an elective at my grade level where I live.

But I did, in the interest of being "well-rounded".

It's almost 10:00, and I'm still doing a friggin lab writeup and being utterly confused.

Sigh.

On edit: the subject itself is interesting. 11th grade chemistry class, not so much.

2. Yeah, I kinda sucked at it too.
One of the few classes I ever had to retake in high school.

Granted, I'd signed up for the gifted one, thinking it would be easy for me. Whoops. :P

4. Yes, but all of life is not based on
doing a titration of acetic acid (vinegar), finding out its concentration, and measuring your percent error.

From Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetic_acid

"Biochemistry

The acetyl group, derived from acetic acid, is fundamental to the biochemistry of virtually all forms of life. When bound to coenzyme A it is central to the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. However, the concentration of free acetic acid in cells is kept at a low level to avoid disrupting the control of the pH of the cell contents. Unlike longer-chain carboxylic acids (the fatty acids), acetic acid does not occur in natural triglycerides. However, the artificial triglyceride triacetin (glycerin triacetate) is a common food additive, and is found in cosmetics and topical medicines.

Acetic acid is produced and excreted by certain bacteria, notably the Acetobacter genus and Clostridium acetobutylicum. These bacteria are found universally in foodstuffs, water, and soil, and acetic acid is produced naturally as fruits and other foods spoil. Acetic acid is also a component of the vaginal lubrication of humans and other primates, where it appears to serve as a mild antibacterial agent.<8>"

Chem is awesome!

9. How do you convert moles per litre into grams per 100 mL?
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 09:17 PM by AspieGrrl
Yeah, it's all in metric (I'm Canadian). I'm slightly stumped.

11. The easy answer is to divide...
if I were there to show you the method I was taught by my chem professor this would be really easy.

what measurement do you have your moles in? is it grams?

15. The molar mass is the weight of one mole of it in grams.
Edited on Tue Apr-29-08 09:45 PM by jasonc
So, if you have a .98 molar solution, unless I am completely forgetting something here, you have 58.8 grams of it.

60grams x .98 = 58.8 grams in a .98 molar solution

so, now what volume are you starting with?

edit: one liter perhaps?

if so, you have 58.8 grams/1 liter = a .98 molar solution.

To get grams/ml you would divide the 58.8 grams/liter by 1000 to get grams/ml of the solution.

or, 0.0588 grams/ml

16. It's cool
I aced it. I didn't have to take the final, but I did. And I fucked it up by intention.

How many moles blah blah blah . I don't know but I have one one my arm, does that help?

Mostly I quoted poetry.

The prof loved me.

Khash.
