Play a "hair metal" song.
L.A. Guns - "I Wanna Be Your Man": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKXa_NuXc9c

Not a Beatles cover, but they did use "I wanna be your lover, baby, I wanna be your man" as the chorus.

Whitesnake - "Still of the Night": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lqb5EcU65IQ

Not a Zeppelin cover, but it sure as hell SOUNDS like one. Oh, and at this point, this probably IS the music mommies and daddies listen to. :P

Talk about 80's kitsch...

7. Dude, you were born with a clean slate. What happened?...
...You could have avoided most of it! Not me. My friend grew up to play lead guitar in a hair-metal band. Yes, I was of the "cursed" generation. It has taken me many years now to repair my soul. And my ears.

9. Too much VH1, for one thing. Also my 8th-grade obsession with Van Halen, which led me by extension
to a lot of this stuff. But c'mon, some of these are good songs! "Still of the Night"? "Cold Blood"? Of course 70's cock-rock is generally way better than 80's cock-rock, but there are always musical gems to be found anywhere.

17. Ah, the seductive, siren sway of VH-1...
...I get it. And you're right, of course, there's great '80s stuff. Not a lot, but it's there. I've been listening a lot to a '70s album from my childhood that still sounds amazing but, hearing it again, it strikes me as a bridge between '70s and '80s cock-rock. That'd be UFO's "Lights Out." I highly recommend it, if you don't know it.

4. Danzig - "Mother"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts37IyjqsFU

Video shows mostly footage from the Halloween 1992 show at Irvine Meadows... if they had panned out to the crowd, you would have seen me sitting in with the sound/lighting engineers! That was the night the barricade broke, and i wanted no part of being up front on Halloween under a full moon; the crowd of 20k+ was too wired.

I still occasionally e-mail back and forth with their bassist; we almost share a birthday, and over time it became a running joke between us.

20. Shout at the Devil
:headbang:

Motley Crue

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bt9nmxieKnk

He's the wolf screaming lonely in the night
He's the blood stain on the stage
He's the tear in your eye
Been tempted by his lie
He's the knife in your back
He's rage
He's the razor to the knife
Oh, lonely is our lives
My heads spinnin' round and round
But in the seasons of wither
We'll stand and deliver
Be strong and laugh and

Shout-shout-shout
Shout at the devil
He'll be the love in your eyes
He'll be the blood between your thighs
And then have you Cry for more
He'll put strength to the test
He'll put the thrill back in bed
Sure you've heard it all before
He'll be the risk in the kiss
Might be anger on your lips
Might run scared for the door
But in seasons of wither
We'll stand and deliver
Be strong and laugh and

26. I'm partial to "Same Old Situation (S.O.S.)" myself:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXG0q0qesRw

She's got an alligator bag
Top hat to match
Dressed in black on black
She's got a Filipino girlie
She claims is her friend
I tell you boys, you just gotta laugh
Now I used to call her Cindy
She changed her name to "Sin"
I guess that's the name of her game
I really used to love her
Then, the kitty she discovered
It's got to be a sexual thing

All, all around the world
Girls will be girls
It's the same ol', same ol' situation
It's the same ol', same ol' ball and chain
I say no no no
No no no

Introduced me to her lover
In a cellophane dress
Then they bid me a sweet fairwell
Last time I saw them
They were kissing so softly
To the sound of wedding bells

All, all around the world
Girls will be girls
It's the same ol', same ol' situation
It's the same ol', same ol' ball and chain
Just like a punch in the teeth
Or a swan dive to the street

No, no, no
No, no, no
If it wasn't for bad luck
I'd have no luck at all
--------------------------------------------

On a rather embarrassing note, I was ambivalent about this song for a long time, because where they say "girlie" I thought they were using a racial slur also beginning with "g." In retrospect I was just being a dumbass, but you never know with these guys... :P

Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns". Good arrangement, maybe it helped having guys from Pearl Jam/Green River/10 Minute Warning in your band. Too bad you died.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ44MDnliPw

Motley Crue's "Looks That Kill!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_w5V0tyaPo

Now for a bad one: Roxy Blue recorded this gem about rawk star pedophilia:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnT0Jjrx15k

Aaaaaaand, on the other end of the spectrum, Nitro's "Freight Train'"! This makes my "Shittiest Songs Ever Foisted On Mankind" list fer sure.

28. Wow, you really dug up the best and worst of the genre. Good work!
That Mother Love Bone song is actually a recent discovery of mine, having downloaded the 'Singles' soundtrack for a bit of early-90's nostalgia. And yes, the fact that Andrew Wood succumbed to a heroin overdose at 24 (only a year older than I am now!) is certainly tragic, but if not for that tragedy we might not have had Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains might have stayed a mediocre glam band instead of discovering their Black Sabbath muse.

Hair "metal" = mainstream with lots of spandex girlz with big hayre, which Metal Church und Anthrax (i.e. bands I listened to) were not and did not have.

31. Ironically, it was one of the first hair metal bands who got me into "real" metal.
I wanted to learn more about Bon Jovi, so I started reading rock magazines. I considered myself as being pretty savvy music-wise, so it bothered me that the mags contained stories stories about bands I'd never heard of, like Metal Church and Slayer and Anthrax. The reaction to Cliff Burton's death made me buy Metallica's Master Of Puppets purely out of curiosity, having absolutely no idea of what I was going to hear. Two riffs later, I was hooked!

that launched the genre.

In my review of Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, I was happy to describe it as "rock's answer to (Michael Jackson's) Thriller." It was released in late 1986, and I didn't have cable at the time, so I had no idea of how right I would be. I also had no idea that the other record labels would come up with Bon Jovis of their own practically overnight--but then again, the golden rule of the entertainment business IS to "do unto others as others have done unto others." So with the exception of the few decent bands that came out of that era (Tesla immediately springs to mind), I do apologize for all the trouble I caused. And I still like Bon Jovi anyway.

"Bad Medicine" (and hey, Sam Kinison's in the video!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYc64BDCWhg

I have to say, though, they were pretty light'n'fluffy even by hair-rock standards.

32. Love that stuff. Here are a few of my favorites.
Cats In Boots was my absolute favorite band (who most people hadn't heard of)

Cats In Boots "Her Monkey" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ODLn_XyzEE

Salty Dog "Come Along" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpeveNqlXoM

Bang Tango "Untied and True" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y30TQtcLR0

Great White "Face the Day" (a cover of a song by an excellent Australian band, The Angels) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI2tfJThAqU&feature=related

Back in the day, I was a music journalist and made it a point to cover bands I really liked who I wanted to turn other people on to. Therefore, I interviewed and wrote about the first three bands mentioned here.
