4. My aunt made it once... my uncle caught a snapper in the lake
and they kept it in an old aquarium by their front door... damned thing would break the water surface and snap at anyone who got within three feet of it; startled me, even when i KNEW it was going to do it.

Then, a few months later, i went over to visit, and the aquarium was gone. I asked Aunt Trish what happened, and she looked at me and then at the huge pot on the stove, and asked me if i was staying for dinner.

Most satisfying meal i have ever had... i hated that turtle.

21. If a snapper gets aholt of ya...
It won't let go until it thunders.
So said grandpa.

5. Turtles On a Plane!...Look out! Whoa, these are vicious...
...snapping turtles. Man-eating, killer turtles! Look out! Oh shit, here they come, up the aisle, with their pointy teeth, their razor-sharp claws....Holy crap! They're getting closer! The killer turtles!...

They're still coming? Yeah? You see 'em?...I dunno, they seem to have stalled a bit...

They're still back there? Getting any closer? No. Doesn't seem like it. Christ, the fuckers move like...turtles, frankly.

Still, they're man-eating, snapping beasts. Best to be carefu-- oh, ah, what? We've landed? Right. Okay. That wasn't so bad. Yeah, not much turbulence at all. The movie? Nah, didn't watch it. I slept most of the way, actually. Oh, are the, uh, killer turtles still in the back? Coming up the aisle? Huh. Making their way? Well, I hope the cleaning crew sees 'em. I'm off. Nice to meet you. Fancy a drink at the Ambassadors' Club?

6. Yes, but not out of a can.
My stepfather used to make it. Best turtles for it are snappers. I love it but am not up to catching, killing and cleaning snapping turtles.

8. Nope, I like turtles too much...
Besides, on that Bizarre Food show with Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel, turtle soup is occasionally on the menu, and the flesh always looks weird and gelatinous. Ugh...

15. I hear that
as one of the few Hawai'i/New Orleans people in existence, my Hawai'i side feels guilty about possibly feeding the sacred honu to my NOLA side. What is a boy to do?

I recommend it highly.

10. That certainly tops mine at Mother's
near where the casino is now. They were, however, open fairly late after too long of a day at work.

That is, assuming you mean Commander's Palace in the Garden District uptown. :-)

18. Yup- the "Commander's Palace" it was. ( I just googled it to check) Thanks for the correction.
I'm horrible with names, so that's not unusual for me.
You know what is unusual? I love FOOD, and I remember good meals...
and I have -NO IDEA- what entree I ate at the Commander's Palace!

I remember that soup, and that's it- that's how good it was.

12. Yes, at that fabulous restaurant in New Orleans whose name escapes me.
Begins with a 'B' I believe. They're famous for their breakfasts and bananas foster.

14. That would be Brennan's
the Brennan family also owns Commander's Palace, where dicksteele had his turtle soup epiphany.

Next time I'm in town (and I will be back!), I may well want to rethink my amphibian predilection in a somewhat more upscale fashion...

I'll eat damn near anything out of the water, but turtles are taboo.

make it from the ones he caught. We have a local seafood market/restaurant that has turtle and alligator soup.

:puke:

and my mom cooked it -- she baked it in the oven

I stayed far, far away from it, too
