2. How many antivirus proggies are you running at once?
If more than one, this may be a problem- different scanners on the same machine like to fight each other and if you try to blend the wrong two you can crash your machine and make it unbootable (Kaspersky and Symantec, for example). It may not be Firefox but your scanner(s) that is (are) broken or simply outdated.
Please note that no antivirus program is 100% effective- there are new virii being released into the wild every day and it's only a matter of time before you catch one even if you're convinced your machine is bullet proof. The chance of any online computer getting a virus approaches 100%. (Virus slaying is a major part of my business and even I'VE gotten 'em on my own machines.)
AVG monitoring the background; I run it about once every 2-3 days (test) I also have spybot, but I just boot it up to run a test about the same time. I don't keep it up constantly. I use CCleaner to also check about once every 3-4 days.
