I'm a paranoid bastard, and I got a call on my phone that said 'restricted' i picked up, and said 'hello?' but there was no answer. After a few seconds, the line went dead.

2. For me it means TROUBLE! My parents are the only
ones that call me from a restricted number. They can't figure out how to take it off.

But usually it is a person you don't want to talk to. Bill collector, telemarketer, mother in law etc...

6. I get phone calls from
123-456-7890, not kidding.

Or the really odd 555-444-3333.

I thought 555 was an unused number which is why it only occurs in TV shows.

I even got one this week, where when I said 'hello', I was told 'I'm sorry, that's an inoperative response'. Click.

Google them. You'll find all your mysterious numbers are tele-marketing. And sometimes their tape recorded messages screw up.

9. 'Private number'
or 'Not Available' or 'Unknown Caller'. I don't remember if it ever showed 'restricted'.

Just telemarketing.

12. I'm not sure what the distinction is exactly
but I have a friend who works at a law firm and every time she calls me from work, the number comes up at "restricted" on my iPhone. Obviously, the individual office phones in a law firm are blocked from public caller ID or lawyers would get harassed, so I'm sure it's just the privacy mechanism on their phones.

On the other hand, she has Caller ID blocked on her home phone and that number comes up as "blocked".

15. A 'restricted' number is from someone who has Caller ID blocked
It depends on the service provider whether Private or Restricted Number shows up. You can set your phone (most cases) to block anonymous phone calls.

16. Not always a telemarketer
Edited on Sat May-03-08 01:00 AM by BlueDogDemocratNH
Usually, it means it's a telemarketer or collector, but not always. Homeless shelters and shelters for victims of domestic violence often use restricted numbers to protect the anonymity of residents.
