I've got two posters, both long-time Loungers, who both come and go from my ignore list. Every time I take them off ignore they say or do something to go right back on within a month.

6. I must agree.
Especially when DU's general forums used to have more intelligence in the discussions.

These days, most of that is found in the Lounge.

I used to believe everyone should have a say. But that does not extend to deliberate baiting or trolling. They do not deserve to be heard.

Flamers are just incredible. Lately I have added this to the Eternal Question list: Do flamers really think they "win"?!1

They are incredibly juvenile, crude, and cowardly (because they tend to act in packs).

(Eternal Questions are, like: Why would a member of any minority group --Hispanic, African American, Gay--- EVER be a Rethug?!1)

48. One, who is generally an attention whore, immediately took it back to the open board,
proclaiming her incredulity and flabberghastedness at my GALL!1 She had never heard of such a thing!1 A second one kept posting in my threads, semi-stalking and continued to "answer" my original p.m., until I Alerted on those. One or two others simply didn't respond at all.

But apparently I'm such a curmudgeon that the word is out and almost all of my threads sink like stones. About the only topic I post that gets an enthusiastic response is attacking "Dr" Laura!1

I consciously avoid flame wars, or debating in GD or GDP. I make up my own mind and decisions and don't feel the need to argue about it. I am no more interested in arguing with fellow liberals than I am with converting Republicans. It's futile and a waste of time.

38. Being in GD-P has been the only time I was tempted to do it.
But I just take a break from even looking at any of it and the temptation passes. I have never put anyone on ignore. I like to see what people think and I have enough self control not to get into fights with people. I just come to the lounge and see what normal people are up to for a change of pace. I notice it is the same 40-50 people over in GD-P who post all of the time and cause trouble because they hate Clinton or they hate Obama and they are unreasonable anyway.

41. I really don't like putting people on ignore
Only had to to it for roughly half a dozen people, through out this ugly and destructive primary. Although I have found doing so will dispell misconceptions. I have found that there are some very cliquish people that attack in swarms, here at DU. Two or three posters will swarm and attack making you feel like all of DU is against you. Put that 2 or 3 on ignore and suddenly they are exposed for what they are, nasty little trolls that in no way shape or form represent the majority of DUers.

It's a shame because the nasty little trolls only care about themselves, and not intelligent discourse on topics they may or may not fully agree with. Cliques indeed, and it's a shame. But it is their loss. They would rather attack.

As for cliques..Maybe some people don't like to see friends UNFAIRLY attacked.
I hate seeing people I respect being accused falsely. To assume that because someone is being ganged up on is because people like to attack is a foolish assumption. Sometimes people are group attacked because they are being stupid and in the wrong.

Edited on Sun May-04-08 03:31 PM by nomad1776
It's known as the swarm

http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/swarm.htm

What I have seen at DU, the swarms usually act to protect a friend that is doing wrong, (which is the biggest down side of the cliquish environment) rather than protecting someone who is unfairly attacked.

71. Or perceived being wrong.
I am not disagreeing with you, certainly, but those of a similar mindset who cannot be bothered to think outside their box (a concept we are all saddled with for one issue or another; we are all guilty) are typically the ones who gang up on the other for merely asking a question or different point of view.

It also depends on the subject afoot.

One thing about the internet is unmalleable or immutable -- people are less inclined to be "diplomatic" in their approach, rendering cliquish behavior much more readily. Of that I, like most people, have been guilty too.

This poster told absolute lies. Since both parties knew they were lies and pretty heinous ones at that, you PM to talk about. They attack and then pull the chicken poop stunt of sending an attack PM and then blocking the response. The lying and the false accusations were slimy enough but the attack and block stunt said all one needed to know about the person's total lack of character.

62. I've never used it and honestly don't think I ever will.
I don't like seeing "holes" in threads. I also want to know what the context is for those replying to the potentially ignored one.

At the same time, I rarely read or post in GD/GD-P, so ignoring or getting ignored isn't an issue. I do read and post sometimes on the Environment/Energy forum and there is one particular one that could be potentially ignored, since I usually skip over his posts. No naming names, but I have never seen anyone quite so hateful and contemptuous and not get immediately TS-ed. He must be a founder...

So, I keep him off ignore in order to see if that ever happens and why

67. I hate you.
It's people like you that keep my post count so low.

I think of a brilliant reply, and you've already said it.

65. I haven't yet.
I do put a lot of threads on ignore, usually because I don't find the subject of the thread very interesting.

73. Never have. I'll sometimes hide a thread, esp.
if I find the topic distressing (animal abuse or something like that) but I've never put anyone on ignore.

74. I don't have a single person "on ignore"...
But there are some people I ignore, just as a matter of principle.
